You have converted me to your hard wax. It keeps things moving like fresh rag-in-a-can for a long time and seems to be better rust prevention for me in my humid garage. It is kind of funny that 1/2 my woodworking hobby is working on metal. Restoration, rust removal, sharpening, etc. Didn’t expect that going in but don’t mind it at all. Equally fidgety and rewarding.

Wait, I thought you were supposed to bury it in the garden. Stomp some mud into it before marketing your video as a "restoration." Or was the algorithm wrong?!?

One of the wrinkles in your shirts makes the plane's tote look broken. So fitting...

The BEST rust prevention for planes that I have found ... wooden body planes 👍 Unfortunately, wooden saws just don't last very long. I've sharpened 3 out of existence.

Fluid Film works great for preventing rust. I use it on all my power and hand tools. I typically use a heavy coat when tools aren’t being used, a quick wipe with a microfiber towel and ready for use.
  • Only difference for me is that instead of sandpaper, I use the sandflex bricks. Sorta like a pencil eraser that's filled through and through with grit, so as it wears out, new, unclogged grit is exposed. Just took a bunch of rust off a lathe yesterday, worked quite well. Not to mention that the green medium grit one is a pretty damn good match for the factory grit on Lie Nielsen's planes, so there won't be an obvious shiny or rough patch after a bit of cleanup

If it is a little to deeply pitted, try restore. I get it at Home Depot. Get a spray bottle too. Use dry sanding, clean off with dry rag. Spray with restore. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Spray again scrub with a green or red scouring pad. Wipe clean. Use light oil wipe clean. Done.

Brillo in the UK are known for a coarse steel wool and detergent pad. The generic term for nylon cleaners over here is Scotchbrite (made by 3M) and is the stuff that everything pretends to be - the grey pad is a great finish polisher.
  • Great timing. I haven't been in my workshop for a couple of weeks, and when I looked at my stanley #5 today, it had a little dusting of rust. PANIC!! Now I I've seen this vid, my heartrate has returned to normal. Thanks.

Great timing on this one! I discovered some very very light rust on the cheeks of a couple of my Veritas planes and was wondering what I should do about it. Thanks!

My shop is literally outside in the PNW so I deal with a lot of rust... I will use some these tips for sure (mainly the hard wax which I should do...)

An excellent video, James. I do something I've never seen other woodworkers use, Rem oil by Remington. I have a giant spray can that must be 10 years old or more. It's made as a rust prevention on blued steel used for gun barrels. It's even lighter than 3 in 1 and seems to last a very long time. Since I really don't hunt much anymore, my can lives on my workbench and it works great. I start out spraying down brand new tools when I use them the first time since I live in a very humid area and my tools are in the garage.
  • A little bit of light oil and a green Scotchbrite pad will work wonders on surface rust. For long-term rust protection I use paste wax and camelia oil.

Wish I had your workshop environment, usually too warm and wet here. Thanks for sharing how you cope!

ohhhhh my bumper ointment's almost out. But seriously loving the new shop storage racks and clamps and hooks and nooks when are we getting vids and details ?
  • @stansbruv3169
You were my inspiration in making my own paste wax. Thank you!
