Situated roughly one mile south of Hadrian’s Wall is one of the great jewels of Roman and early medieval archaeology: Vindolanda. Over the past 50 years, annual excavations at this site have revealed incredible amounts of new information.     It bugs the hell out of me to keep hearing that the Dark Ages are called that because society descended into barbarism after the Romans left. The Dark Ages got their name because of the lack of records from this era. The Romans wrote stuff down and we've found their writings. After they pulled out, the written record disappears for a couple of hundred years, thus our knowledge of that time period went "dark." The Britons left behind didn't go back to living in caves and grunting! They continued to live as they had, and even innovated to improve their lives. They just didn't leave as much stuff behind as did the Romans.

    Great doc but why does everybody use endless loud music? You don't need it, most of it doesn't fit the situation, also you can't have things like piano playing while someone is talking.

  • I missed her name but the lass with the dark hair has a fascinating accent. She must have learned her English in Ireland, but I have no idea what her original language was. I love a good mixed accent!
