In cantata 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, everything revolves around the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. They wait throughout the night with burning lamps for the arrival of the bridegroom. Five of them have brought along extra oil to keep their lamp burning. The others run out of oil and go off to buy some more. The bridegroom arrives while they are away.

Recorded for the project All of Bach on February 11th 2018 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

The English subtitling for this cantata was sponsored by the American Bach Society. The translation was made by Daniel R. Melamed and Michael Marissen. For an annotated version of the text and translation, see bachcantatatexts.org/BWV140.htm.

As an Egyptian, I am so grateful for the Dutch for perserving this precious heritage of Bach, the best composer of all time. Truly, Music knows no boundaries.

Reading all the comments here, as a Chicagoan, listening and sharing this beyond magnificent gift of music with all of you tells me Bach has achieved a wish from all of the world that goes beyond any faith or religion. He has connected all of us, centuries later, via the gift of music. I am deeply touched by his music, and by extension, to all of you whose heart has been similarly moved.
  • Diese Musik kann in schweren Zeiten die Seele aufrichten und beim Weiterleben sehr behilflich sein.
  • Thank the Lord for this music. I wish music in church today could still be this beautiful.
  • Bach is ruthless. He strikes us with the beauty of his compositions in such a way that it is difficult to experience this music without tears. However, it happens when performers achieve a really high level. Praise to you Netherlands Bach Society for all this beauty.

I don't say it often, but seeing such amazing quality uploads shared with everyone around the world for free makes me proud to be Dutch :-)

Maria Keohane = uniquely beautiful natural vocal timbre + impeccable technique + superb stage presence and dramatic sensibility.
  • "Wachet auf !" "Wake up !" "Wakker worden !" Das ist die Essenz. That is the essence. Dat is de essentie. Greetings from Hamburg/Germany
  • From the bottom of my heart I thank you Netherlands Bach Society. This recording is single handedly pulling me out of a dark place day after day . I feel a renewed optimism for humanity when I listen to this cantata, with its immeasurable beauty. Joy and hope in audible form. I love it beyond comprehension. Thank you again 🙏

0:24 i love this scene, when the clarinet plays the wonderful melody and how he and Maria Keohane look at each other, it shows the magic of the music

Finally, finally the courage to take that solemn tempo in the entrance choir! Most often conductors take it much too quick. Thank you.
