When we were new immigrants 21 years back, we also rented a 1BR in Don Mills. The rent for 1BR then was just $700. A few months later, my mom-in-law was visiting so we moved to the next door 2BR apt that came up available. It was $900. Unbelievable that rent now has ballooned to that amount that feels like a mini mortgage.

woh, be careful with those NEW condo-apts, as they are not rent controlled. So after the 1 year lease, they can raise the rent to whatever they want. - Any apartment, house, condo, basement or mobile home that someone has lived in since before Nov. 15, 2018 is covered by rent control.

I’m surprised your cousin/realtor didn’t tell you: you need to have EVERYTHING with you when hunting for apartments - employment history, (proof of employment with pay slips, references, UTD credit report, cash or debit for first & last plus any extra fees, criminal background history - everything. Looks like you weren’t at all prepared to apply and/or sign on-the-spot. Seeing a place on Wednesday and not getting the paperwork until Friday - I knew instantly you lost that β€œdream apartment. It’s great to see videos like this with realistic budgets under $2K. I hope you ended up finding a great place!
