Tacx FLUX 2 smart trainer - unboxing, first impressions cycling vlog #indoorcycling #tacxflux2

(update) I am currently waiting for a replacement see issues marked "update" in description below.

Part 1 unboxing, Part 2 quick ride, Part 3 Cycling around Vancouver misc clips from 2018-19.

I recently purchased the Tacx FLUX 2 from Jubilee Cycle in Burnaby. This is my second smart trainer, I have used around 5 different platforms last year and put a couple thousand km on the kinetic rock and roll trainer in 2019. This is an upgrade for me as I have enjoyed the benefits of indoor cycling and could justify a more advanced unit.
I have only spent about 8 hours on it so far but I can tell you a few things off the bat.

Pros - No rear wheel slippage when standing and it feels realistic to stand, a smaller footprint and tidier unit, better resistance on steep hills and at slower speeds (this is a major benefit), quicker reaction time to gradients, less full circle resistance, better power cord. Pretty good in erg mode in zwift.

Cons - (update) Smells lot like moth balls (should go away?) well it's actually stated on the tacx website that this is a known problem. However that's an understatement. Mine wreaks when it heats up. It has gotten better but if you put your nose to the vents you GAG! In the morning I could smell it 2 doors down. F#cking gross, and really angry about this.

(update) erg mode isn't working well on zwift it's hard to describe but it's definitely not fluid. In regular mode it won't allow me to sprint over 600 watts and now 400 is becoming impossibly challenging. I'm not a weakling in a sprint, these numbers are easily obtained.

(update) it's makes a low growling noise, cadence is a VERY slow to register change, they should just include a separate cadence sensor rather than trying to "estimate it" because it's useless.

You cannot fudge the resistance like a wheel based trainer, meaning if I was dying on a group ride I could slacken tension/rolldown speed just to hang in there and finish in the bunch.

(UPDATED UPDATE) Have a replacement now, it's night and day, works well, doesn't stink and simulates grades well on first ride. Update end of April 2020, no issue with the replacement, enjoying the unit a lot.

Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comments and thumbs up.

If you're in the Vancouver area consider supporting a local shop, Jubilee Cycle can take care of you, give them a call!

  • Hello, could you tell me how many axes does it bring? Does it only have a 5mm axle? I know it has separate adapters but I don't know if there is a second axis. Thanks¡¡¡¡

Hi great video. I also got Flux 2 with type 2 axle, and using the 10 speed Shimano 105 CS-5700 cassette, how did you figure out how many spacers you need? because you said you needed 2 spaces, now I'm thinking if I also need to have 2 or 1? Thanks
  • Hello! Thank you for review, how is it working on ERG mode now that you have the new one? Is the accuracy problem solved? Thank you again!

After 9 months, any pros and cons. I’m trying to decide between this and the Wahoo Kickr

Is this the updated version for 2020? I see you've had issues with it.. has Garmin given you another model since you've had so many issues with this?
  • @jullian4
Is the second spacer really necessary if you have a 10 speed?
