Lyrics

Blacking in and out in a strange flat in east London
Somebody I don't really know just gave me something
To help settle me down and to stop me from always thinking about you
And you know your life is heading in a questionable direction
When you're up for days with strangers and you can't remember anything
Except the way you sounded when you told me you didn't know what I should do

It's a long road up to recovery from here
A long way back to the light
A long road up to recovery from here
A long way to making it right

And I've been waking in the morning just like every other day
And just like every boring blues song I get swallowed by the pain
And so I fumble for your figure in the darkness just to make it go away
But you're not lying there any longer
And I know that that's my fault
So I've been pounding on the floor and
I've been crawling up the walls
And I've been dipping in my darkness with Serotonin-boosters
Cider and some kind of smelling salts!

It's a long road up to recovery from here
A long way back to the light
A long road up to recovery from here
A long way to making it right

And on the first night we met you said, "Well darling, let's make a deal
If anybody ever asks us let's just tell them that we met in jail."
And that's the story that I'm sticking to like a stony-faced accomplice
But tonight I need to hear some truth if I'm ever getting through this
Yeah you once sent me a letter that said, "If you're lost at sea
Close your eyes and catch the tide my dear and only think of me"
Well, darling, now I'm sinking, and I'm as lost as lost can be
And I was hoping you could drag me up from down here towards my recovery

If you could just give me a sign, just a subtle little glimmer
Some suggestion that you'd have me if I could only make me better
Then I would stand a little stronger as I walk a little taller
All the time
Because I know you are a cynic
But I think I can convince you
Yeah, cause broken people can get better if they really want to
Or at least that's what I have to tell myself if I am hoping to
Survive!

It's a long road up to recovery from here
A long way back to the light
A long road up to recovery from here
A long way to making it right

Darling, sweet lover, won't you help me to recover?
Darling, sweet lover, won't you help me to recover?
Darling, sweet lover, won't you help me to recover?
Darling, sweet lover, one day this will all be over

  • This is one of the most important songs in my life. 2013, I was getting myself together recovering from 10 years of depression and drug use. I found a purpose, a new path and started a new life. Now, ten years later, it's all fallen apart. I listened to this again today and remembered that "broken people can get better if they really want to". God, I want to.

Can't believe I got to be part of this. I'm the one in the sparkly shorts at the front. Such a brilliant day and he bought us all pizza!

Not many songs like this exist. An anthem that make me want to run 500 miles....yet also makes me want to break down and cry. Genius

I don't understand how this song has barely over 2 million views. In my opinion one of the best and most unique songs on the air right now.
  • 2020 anyone else listening to this belter cause there’s no one else as unique and catchy as this man

I’m 21. I was getting my hair cut maybe 5 months ago, and my barber mentioned the song “Get better” and told me I should listen to it. I added that song on Spotify and listened to it, but it was t until last week I visited the creator of that song’s page, Frank Turner. I clicked on Recovery and about 20 seconds into the song I Remembered it. From the back of my memory was sitting this song, for maybe about 10 years. I remember this song so vividly, to the point I don’t understand how I forgot about. I used to love this song, when I was 12, and I’m 21 now. This song means more to me than it did back then, at least now I can understand the lyrics and lap them over my own problems. Banger song, shout out to my barber for putting me back onto this fuckin heat

Never fails to lift my spirits, make me cry, and remind me to stay alive, all in one go, every single time. Thank you, Frank. So much.

"If anyone ever asks us let's just tell them we met in jail" I have no idea what this song is about but that line always makes me laugh.
