  • Let's be real - Sean Evans is really the best interviewer in the business. He let's his guests speak, he asks interesting questions and (as shown here) does great research. Love Hot Ones, one of my favorite shows.

This is just Ethan taking Sean's interviewing Master Class

"The wings, the hot sauce, the black background, and a bald guy"
  • I love how when Sean’s guests compliment his questions, he just gives a quick thank you and moves on when really all that work went into getting those great questions. No doubt he deserves all the success he’s gotten
  • One thing I believe separates Sean Evans from every other interviewer is he NEVER talks about himself and keeps the narrative and focus just about his guests.

It's kinda funny how someone can talk up someone's interviewing skills while constantly interrupting them in their own interview

3:35 Sean calling out to 2:10 earlier when he was cut off. Sean was starting to go deeper, but nope already getting forced to the next question. 😁

From 3:21 to 4:37: Sean gives his philosophy on how to conduct an interview. Ethan at 4:38: Hmm, interesting. Do you have an interview philosophy?

Sean is a clever guy that may have stomach problems soon.

Sean: "That process has actually gotten more intense, to a point that I don't know if I can.." Ethan: "Ya, great, hey shut up that thought for a sec though I wanna talk about how I'm trying to be a better interviewer.." 537,899 viewers: "Blank stare emoji"

2:18 Really wish Ethan wouldn't have cut him off. I think he was getting ready to say that he wasn't sure if he could keep up that pace.

My expectations of Hot Ones isn't that things ratchet up, but that the quality maintains, and that the editing stays crisp, and that the guests are interesting. I doubt The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson ratcheted up, but it was the consistent quality and delivery of deliverables that put it on top. One of the most important ingredients to the show is Sean. It works because of his attitude, professionalism, preparation, and smooth delivery and deft handling of the guests.

It's so weird to see one of the best interviewers being interviewed by one of the worst.
  • 2:17 he seemed like he was going to say something deep, I hate how you interrupted him.
  • One thing I’ve noticed about Sean that’s unfortunately kind of rare- if the guest only answers a question halfway or just doesn’t go for it at all, sometimes even a little rudely, he goes with the flow and doesn’t ever lose his cool. Even like news anchors or talk show hosts, sometimes they run out of questions quickly or worry about the guest turning down a question.

It's funny how Sean talks about how some interviewers are trying to just get their next question out and Ethan is doing just that, really just following his goal of learning as much as possible from Sean but sometimes not really following up on his answers or even letting him finish here and there... It's understandable though)
