Prepare yourselves to hear the story of Yeonmi Park because it’s heavy.

When she was a teenager, Yeonmi escaped from North Korea to China. What she experienced was horrible — being sold as a sex slave by border officials, walking across Mongolia in the middle of winter and nearly dying of starvation.

But Yeonmi made it out alive, and now she lives happily in Chicago. She is outspoken about the terrible regime in North Korea and she voices her thoughts on her YouTube Channel, and through various best selling books. I invite you to share your opinions about Yeonmi’s story and about North Korea in general in the comments below.

Hope you had a very Merry Christmas and remember that freedom is not always free.

I’ll see you in the next year when I’m kicking off my Saudi Arabia videos!!!

What are your thoughts on North Korea? Would love to hear from you. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas!

"Freedom needs responsibility, discipline, and virtue." What wise words from her.
  • @ammmm_4803
Wow her ability to converse in English improved tremendously. Very far from her 2014 speech. She's now speaking in a natural way. So glad she has a fighting spirit to live and learn.
  • “If you have a meaning, everything is bearable” - this is one of the most insightful statements I've ever heard. Mad respect, Yeonmi.
  • @kikisworld1837
As a refugee myself who walked almost a month to escape for freedom, I must say how thankful we are for those countries that allow refugees to start again. 🌸
  • @n4musica
I’ve watched many of her speeches and interviews and what always hits me is when she says “People always say I was so brave for crossing to China. And I have tell them I wasn’t brave, I was just starving to death!”
  • Those last parts when Yeonmi points out how US is beginning to lose its traction on freedom and how it is becoming like North Korea, from a defector's point of view, Americans must appreciate the liberty they thought they never had.
  • @SarahU2000
I watch all of Yeonmi’s videos. She has a way of telling her stories that make me feel her pain. It breaks my heart thinking about all of the people still living in that hell. Every time I watch her videos I wish I could reach through the screen and hug her.
  • @kacevang7464
Her story was terrifying but she has turned it into such an inspiring thing. So much respect to her. And her love of America is more than some people I know have. She is an example of what being American is all about.
  • @erikh1041
what she said about all the divison in america at the end is so true. it’s happening all over the world now
  • @ice_cream_neko
When she started saying the price they sold them for, I started crying. How can someone do this to a human being... selling them? This is made me so sad.
  • I just finished reading her book. This interview only touched the surface compared to what she went thru… she is the epitome of resilience. Highly recommend her book. Thank you for the way you handled this interview.
  • @ab-tt2su
she is the whole definition of survivor , bravery and inspiration. what a motivation she carrying inside hats off to her !
  • @djhemry
Yeonmi is a precious soul. I’m so glad she escaped and can tell us about her experiences. God bless her.
  • Holy Crap, The end of this interview was freaking nuts. Its so sad the division that is happening in our country, and when the NK Defector says the US is beginning to have similarities you know something is wrong. Everyone should hear this!
  • @mrpeace9836
Her idea of freedom makes so much sense. Just freedom is not enough we need discipline to sustain it.
  • @adrleo
Thank you so much for making this video Drew and so much respect to Yeonmi on her internal richness and positivity on the meaning of life! It is amazing to learnt that she came a truly long way from not getting educated from young to a university graduate and fluently spoken with love and passion. An ultimate example for quitters!!
