In today's alternate history scenario we ask what if Germany never issued the blank check to Austria, and remained neutral while Austria declared war on Serbia? Would Austria be able to fend off a coalition of enemies on all sides? Would Germany be crippled politically without their Austrian ally? Will there be a World War?

Please overwork that map. Give Germany Memel and Austria-Hungary Galicia at least please.

There is no way the Entente would ever allow Germany to be neutral in this Great War, they literally wanted it gone

Britain would have never allowed Russia to influence the entire Balkans and disturb the Balance of power by such a large scale. Britain and Germany actually grew closer before ww1 with the end of the Naval Arms Race and Britain slowly seeing Russia as the biggest threat. If Russia did Push further than Galicia Germany and England would have Not just stood at the side and watching Russia becoming the worlds strongest power.
  • why do you keep claiming that Serbia had an alliance with Russia? In reality, the Russians joined the conflict between Serbia and Austria only because they were "Slavic brothers". NO formal alliance between Serbia and Russia EVER EXISTED. Russia was also criticized by France and Britain because it made itself the aggressor that escalated the conflict. Plus Germany would never join a regional conflict in the Balkans.

I really don’t see Britain and Germany (even if they remained neutral) just sitting by and letting a great power like Austria get completely dismantled. They would at least help arbitrate a fair peace. And if Russia or Italy refuse, threaten to intervene
  • If i had a penny for every time germany needed to carry an Ally who couldn`t hold thier own wheigth in a mayor world conflict i had 2 pennies.... Which isn`t a lot, but its wierd that it happened twice
  • Austria may have wanted war, but they sure as heck weren't ready for it.
  • Nice video overall, but please use the correct austria-hungary map. Why is Galicia part of russia before ww1. It doesnt make any sense and destroys the video
  • i do think germany still wouldnt allow parties like italy to get involved in the war and threaten to defend austria if they do so. i imagine some sort of agreement between britain and germany to contain the war to the east between austria and russia/serbia

The easiest way to remove the blank cheque is to prevent the german foreign ministers change to the kaisers message which was all support except for militaristic
  • What's worth mentioning is how cautious Austro-Hungarian leadership was over Russia. Sure, they wanted war with Serbia, but they were waiting for German approval first. This can be supported with the fact that Austria-Hungary actually wanted to stop Serbian expansionism during the 1st Balkan War, but Germany said they weren't ready for a war yet in 1912, so Austria-Hungary didn't intervene and was still content with an Albanian buffer state. The Austro-Hungarians also wrongly assumed Germany would support them in their own offensive in August 1914 to encircle whole Poland (where the Austro-Hungarians briefly took Krasnik and Komarow), but Germany simply stayed at the defensive (only pushing the Russians out of East Prussia) and you know what then happened. In conclusion, the Austro-Hungarians knew they couldn't beat Russia alone, they always counted on German support, but that help only arrived after Russia already took Galicia in late 1914.
  • Ok i know I’m gonna start a war in the comments but after seeing Austria-Hungary government act like a little whiny kid just because Serbia declined the last 2 demands on the ultimatum I’m gonna say Austria-Hungary started the war

Germany staying out of WW1 is like the US not joining the space race or Brits stopping drinking tea
