Juan Garrido was an Afro-Spaniard conquistador known as the first documented black person in what would become the United States. Born in West Africa, he went to Portugal as a young man. In converting to Catholicism, he chose the Spanish name Juan Garrido.
  • I was looking for a connection between the word “Kuba (aka Cuba)” and the naming of it. If indeed Juan Garrido had a connection with Kongo thru culture it would make sense why the island was named that since the word doesn’t seem to exist in Spanish nor Taino language. In Congo, there’s a tribe called Kuba (Kuba Empire’s people are called BaKuba)

His presence was a bad deal for Native Americans. But its important that we recognize the existence of the Black Conquistadores, because they are evidence of the first Black people in the Americas. So no he's no hero, but the reality of his existence is vital to maintaining the true narrative of history.
