There are over 1000 Pokemon currently in existence, but did you know that some of your favorites weren't supposed to exist at all? In this video, I'll be looking into the stories behind 10 Pokemon, how they pretty much only came about due to happenstance, and how it wasn't the intent for them to exist at all originally!

  • Actually in the porygon anime episode it was actually pikachus fault but porygon got all the blame because pikachu is the Pokémon mascot
  • The original Weedle line's final stage Pokémon looks a lot like Ledyba and Ledian. I wonder if they kept the design for those two instead.

One thing I would like to get to know more of is the whole "balancing" that gen 5 received and why it was applied when these mons were supposed to be different designs and types. The balancing applied to Stunfisk, but it's also well known that the Frillish line got the Ghost type when it was supposed to be a pure Water type. I'm curious into what the thought process was and how that applies to more mons in other generations as well. The reworking of mons for type changes could also be a fundamental factor into how we see regional and convergent mons as well, laying down at least the basis for its inspiration in later generations.

Lugia is one of my favorite pokemon, it's a great design and name that feels like a genuine mythological creature. Areodactyl is also a personal favorite, as is tyranitar. Glad these events happened XD
  • @Jouch_Couch
What if we got weedle's OG evos as regional forms for gen 10? Weedle's line hasn't been in any games for a few gens now and it's definitely deserving of some extra treatment

I always thought Beedrill and Batterfree lines were counterparts because of Mohamed Ali's famous quote: "float like a butterfly sting like a bee". Maybe it has something to do with that. The also honored Jacky Chan and Bruce Lee in the two hitmons in the English names, but the Japanese names also honor some Japanrse martial artists
  • I think it is kinda cool that the all mighty Lugia was not even going to be real which to me seems also a little strange since Lugia is such an iconic character in Pokémon also I’m so glad I made the cut since it’s a very cool counterpart for Ho Oh
  • I love the story about how he(Tekeshi) got really drunk/stoned one night and woke up the next day to a Lugia drawing he cranked out in a drunken stupor. Idk if it’s true or not but it’s a good story
  • @Narnes64
So a two stage evolution beetle Pokémon, first one with a goofy, dunce-like face and the second one with four arms and what seems to be noticeable white gloves… Something tells me the old weedle evolutions weren’t entirely scrapped 🐞

I dont understand the hate for Stunfisk Not all Pokemon have to be cool, cute or pretty. There are severe lack of derpy looking Pokemon
  • @coolguy5133
I always feel like Bidoof's existence is a mistake.

Eh, I disagree with the Aerodactyl one. The old amber. Most definitely, that very much works. Fossil pokemon did not have the more defined pattern of coming in pairs, it is gen one. Aerodactyl could have easily existed either as a non fossil, or used some other fosil, maybe its jawbone. then with the success of Jurrasic park the fossil item was changed... Or maybe ALL three of them were just Pokemon, and the entire fossil revive was added after jurrasic park.

Teddisura being a fire starter would have been 🔥 no pun intended
  • Fun fact: Mime Jr’s beta form was called “barerīna” which means “ballerina” in Japanese
  • @RoyArkon
Once again great video. Defiantly glad that we got Lugia, I like it's design more than that of Ho-oh, although Ho-oh's theme music in HG/SS is much better than Lugia's.
  • @M_Alexander
Ok hold up. I have to say this but amber is widely considered to be fossilized tree resin. Not all fossils are petrified bones; there are amber samples containing insect and even dinosaur feather fossils
  • @gustavju4686
Fossil Pokémon in general were inspired by Jurassic Park. Aerodactyl is just more overt.
  • @JcDizon
The early sprites/artwork of the Weedle line looks so creepy and they look like they came straight from a horror game/movie.
