The Imposing and Beautiful Devils Tower

Published 2024-06-09
Northeastern Wyoming’s Devils Tower became a National Monument in 1906. The 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind really brought it to national attention and increased the mystery associated with it. It is a gorgeous natural wonder surrounded by a trail that would be likely easily doable by most people. Add the wildlife and the Native American legend and you have a really enjoyable stop to visit!

My wife and I just visited the tower back on May 29th. We enjoyed the walk around the monument.

Devil's Tower truly is a unique place and worthy of a stop. The last time I was there was probably in the 1980s. While the prairie dogs are cute, I do remember driving through Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the 1990s, and seeing signs warning that the prairie dogs in that part of the park were carrying the plague. Probably don't want to let your dog (or yourself) get too close to them if there's an outbreak in the area.
  • Loved visiting Devils Tower. I remember all the prairie dogs. The hike around the Tower was really nice because of the benches and shade. I appreciate that some areas are restricted to respect the spiritual significance to the native population.
  • I remember going there back in the 90s. We did that same hike. Did it with my friend who is in a wheelchair. A couple hilly parts we had to double up in pushing her or guiding her downhill so she didn’t fall out. It’s a great place to explore
  • We had Devils Tower on our literary leaving The Black Hills going to Yellowstone. My husband wanted to kind of bypass it and we almost did...and thank goodness we didnt!! What a BEAUTIFUL place! And you don't even realize it til you get there! Great video, Pops Glad you and Josh enjoyed it!

Beautiful!!! Thank you so much for taking us along. All the animals look so cute ! I love that the trail wasn’t crowded with people (:
  • Hi! Did you miss this at Devil's Tower? Fun to frame the tower within this sculpture. Also, just FYI it's Belle "Foosh" River. But, we know what you meant :) Enjoy you videos with seniors in mind. Located near the picnic area, the Circle of Sacred Smoke, by sculptor Junkyu Muto, honors the American people as a gesture of world peace. The sculpture is designed to help raise visitor awareness of the importance of Devils Tower to over twenty affiliated tribes.

I didn't stop at Devil's Tower the first time through WY. Were some of those prairie dogs blonde fur? In Badland's they all were, and one stop had an explanation how they ended up in the area. They are indeed too cute and so fun to watch.
