Firth of Fifth by Genesis (full band cover)

Published 2013-07-25
Firth of Fifth is one of the most demanding prog rock pieces to do live. This was only our 2nd run-through as a band, and the fact that nobody was seriously injured is an accomplishment in itself.

I found this old rehearsal video on my crashed hard drive. We recorded it on Nov. 26, 2011 in NY with a couple of microphones hastily thrown around the room. The band was called Downing Duck or something like that.

Keyboards used:
Roland A-90 (piano intro & all pianos)
Alesis QS8.2 (organ in verse, mellotron-ish strings, keyboard solo)
Alesis QS8 (flute solo)
Hammond B-3 (organ in guitar solo).

It kills me that you can't see the B3 on camera. I've found that merely standing next to a B3 makes you seem twice as good as you really are.

  • Very Nice! Congratulations! It seems that I was listening to GENESIS itself. Great! From a Genesis fan from Vinhedo/SP - Brazil.

Rick look forward to hearing your volcano erupting . My favourite instrument are the drums, and until visiting your site I had no idea who Terry Bozzio was, omg he is outrageous, makes Mr Moons kit look like a plaything. 31 minute solo's a little too indulgent for me or anyone. So ill stick with Neil Peart. Not sure if you have had the pleasure of The Australian Pink Floyd Band over there, but my god totally amazing.
  • This band did so much in its first weekend together. (this is just one recording). When I look back at it I still see a great group of guys and perhaps the worst waste of musical talent in allowing this magical group to implode. More work from Genesis, ELP, Gentle Giant, Yes, Pink Floyd, UK, Jethro Tull, Zappa, Rush, King Crimson, Focus and more would have been a fantastic crowd pleasing prog show to have presented. All done to perfection and many vintage instruments on stage. It was a crime to not finish this bands vision. But then the personality struggles within a band are a common part of the story of Rock & Roll. I can say this was a fun, fun weekend. The promise of an adventure was still alive then. Dude the B-3 was so cool....! Rigged with two amps to run dual 122 cabinets.! "deafening" I was teaching myself some fun jams on it, was proud to have been able to have it there for you to use with such pure prog talent....! It killed me to sell it a few years later. Went to a church down your way in Southern NJ .

You are so amazingly, absolutely the BEST!!!!  I know I've already told you but instead of all the other crap music out there why can't we be hearing you instead of the other talentless goons!!  I'm still thinking Magic!!!!!  How many times can a person hit LIKE?!!  lol  Suzanne

Cant start to tell you how many times I have, and continue enjoying this piece of music. An epic piece of music to play, credit to you all. Hackett is so understated in the guitar world, and your man did a great job.

  • @ZeroChannelZero
Hey Paul, thanks! Firth is definitely one of the finest prog pieces, and Steve's work is indeed criminally underrated. Hey, stay tuned... also recovered from my crashed hard drive: our 2012 recording of Dance on a Volcano, complete with the original album ending!
  • @incubus442
Wow! Fantastic version of this song!! Do you have any other videos of Genesis covers?
  • That B-3 was a thing of beauty for sure.... Please do post the Dance on a Volcano recording if you ever find that.. I remember recording so many great songs that weekend, and I know there is at least one good vocal track to work with! R
  • @paulriley1123
Forgot to ask is La Vila Strangiata on your repertoire as, for me it is betweem that and FOF as the two best Prog rock songs ever,
  • Great! Just one question, though. Why doesn't anyone play the flute solo on an actual flute anymore? I haven't seen a single youtube cover video of this masterpiece that doesn't replace the flute with keyboards or a guitar solo...
  • @ZeroChannelZero
Thank you sir! As a matter of fact "Dance on a Volcano" is coming up next (this week I hope).
