I got a striker from some blacksmiths at the Duluth Fall Fest that didn't have time to temper it so here I am learning to temper my striker. Thanks for the video.

When heat treating it helps to hang a magnet on a wire from the front of your forge. Use it to find the point where the steel no longer attracts the magnet at all. This is called critical temp. When you find it, immediately plunge the steel in the quenchant. If you are looking for pure hardness plunge it all the way in. If you want part to remain soft leave that part out until the entire piece is cool. If you pull it out while part is still hot the heat will transfer to the rest of the piece and it will soften the part you quenched to harden.

Great video on from several different aspects. Congrats on upcoming class. Based on what I just saw, you're well past being someone totally new to the art. That's a perfect position to be in to gain the most from the class, in terms of tips & techniques. Thanks for sharing. God Bless.

Heres a way if checking if you have good carbon content or not. Put a known piece of low carbon steel to a grinder and watch the sparks. Then get a file and do the same. You are looking for nice sparks that look like those from the file. If you put the striker to the grinder and your striker throws sparks like the file then its temper issues if not then its low carbon.

Great vid Justin, try & error is what it's all about. Actually I don't know why re-tempering the steel should make it work better in throwing sparks? I think the metal just gets harder if it gets compacted by hitting it with a hammer. But I'm absolutely no blacksmith and maybe I'm totally wrong ;-) Thanks for showing this and atb, Marc

back in the 70's i bought one of those cheap Tower flintlock pistols.the frizzen would not make a spark.i looked up a color chart of some sort that showed how hot you had to get the steel.well it worked.i used a buddy's welding torch and got it over red hot and plunged it in water. the main spring was sort of weak and i could not get a good spark all the time so it went up as a wall hanger, check for that color chart and try again
