The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famers, who've been playing together for more than half a century, don't let old resentments get in the way of a new album and tour. Correspondent Jim Axelrod talks with members of The Doobie Brothers – Michael McDonald, Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John McFee – about the band's longevity, and their first studio album in more than a decade, "Liberté."

The Doobies have lasted because their music is honest, real, and a whole Lotta soul.
  • Roll down the car windows and crank up the Pioneer stereo!!! From a 70's teenager to a nearly 60 yr old... This music never gets old!!!

We're all 20 years old again when listening to the Doobie Brothers. I had their 1st album on 8 track! 🤣

The most AMAZING thing about the "Doobie Brothers" is that they sound exactly 💯% the SAME! I ❤ this band!

Michael MacDonald converted the Doobie Brothers into a Blue-Eyed Soul band during my youth....As an African American Female, bused out to a predominately white school back in the 70s...the "heavy metal" locker area was too much for a child raised on R&B and Jazz....When I heard the Doobie Brothers, on AM Radio, that was it for me...an instant fan, til this day, lol...I was fortunate to see the Doobie Brothers, Earth Wind and Fire and the Eagles at Freihoffer's Jazz Festival at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center [ SPAC ] and Radio City in NYC throughout the past 15 years....I always enjoy these bands immensely my entire adult life.

Michael has one of the coolest most distinctive voices in all of rock and roll. Love the work he did with Steely Dan.
  • The Doobies were quite literally the soundtrack of my high school days! So glad to see they're still together and still rocking -- and sounding as fresh and young as they did back then!

the best of both Doobie worlds. Tom Johnstone AND Michael McDonald era!

Around 1976 or so I put together a road trip cassette tape...jam packed with Doobie and the Eagles. Priceless memories.

The unsung hero is Tiran Porter. His bass lines and baritone bottom harmonies gave them their distinctive sound that they continue to copy.

I just saw the Doobie Brothers in concert this Summer of '21. They were awesome! They performed 22 songs and then 3 more for the encore! I said to my daughter who was with me: "These guys are really good for being old folks, huh?" She smiled and replied: "They're really good, period!" :D

The Doobie brothers are great, Michael McDonald is just incredible.
  • One of the most surprising concerts I ever attended was the Doobie Brothers. I knew and enjoyed their music…but didn’t consider myself a fan and didn’t own their records. I didn’t need to…they were on every radio station 24/7. With low expectations, I went with my friends to see their show. We somehow managed to grab 12th row seats. And I was captivated. Hearing their entire body of work done live was quite impressive. Seeing them perform live was a joyous experience. Thank you for the walk down memory lane. We have all aged…but we grew up with the best rock music ever made. I feel sorry for anyone under 60 who missed this musical era. Ya had to be there!

Michael is very humble. The band didn't "lose it's soul" when he joined. The great original songs were still there, he added great ones to them.

Love this band, they been riding around with me for 50 years.
  • @paistebob3163
Michael diversified their repitoire and gave the group a unique richness that nobody else can quite match. I love both periods because it is still great music, just different...you get two bands for the price of one and never a dull moment!
  • Of course they're not the same 20 something guys they once were but the fact they're still rockin at 70 something, that's called staying power! Every time I hear one of their tunes on the radio, it gets me movin. Good clean rock and roll. Never get tired of hearing it.
