In the last video, we tried to get a modern network attached storage device working with Windows 98. I had to install a patch from the Unofficial Service Pack 3 to allow the 98 PC to log into it. Today we're gonna be checking out everything that this pack has to offer. Or at least, the things I was able to install...

"..but Everything Goes Wrong" Title of a classic Micheal MJD video
  • @GumSkyloard
"but everything goes wrong" Now that's how we know that it's gonna be a good video.
  • I actually find videos where things go wrong much more enjoyable and entertaining then a video where everything goes smooth

"Not responding" does not mean the program has frozen; it means the window is not responding to window messages. It's probably still installing when you're killing the process. It's just using the UI thread as part of the install process for some reason. Bad design, but not necessarily frozen. Try leaving it for an hour plus, depending on the specs of the system.

the 5 dollar pc has been through so much and I'm impressed that late 90s hardware is going strong
  • @regnt9044
You know it's a legit MJD video when you see the "use at your own risk" message written in 'MS Comic Sans" xD 07:04

I found your channel recently and I love it. My dad had his masters in computer science from way back in the 70's. I grew up with him constantly working with computers and I picked up a hobby of tinkering with old PC's because of it. Your videos make me happy!

the mic issues got me off guard, I was watching with earphones, then it started sounding as if I had speakers in my work pc, which I don't have, super weird sound

Whoever made the service pack is a genius
  • @achaycock
As a TLDR: If you install the main updates from an earlier version of the service pack (3.64 and below) first, version 3.66 will very likely work thereafter. This has been very interesting to me as I have been using variants of this pack across many machines for many years, starting with 1.5. Recently I have been experimenting with an 'ultimate' Windows 98 build and came across this issue. Having watched this video already, I was aware that the issue was likely with the pack and not the computer, and so I looked at earlier versions. As an aside, it will always extract to c:\Windows\Temp\lxp000.tmp - or a sequentially numbered variant if done multiple times. Simply copy this to another location where it won't be deleted and run infex.exe from within that folder to simply get the menu up and not have to extract each and every time. I hope that this helps people in the future.

Try to unpack the compressed exe. Winrar, 7zip will do. In the folder you will find some .inf files. Right click - Install. Job done. No freezing, errors, etc. That is how I did the install on a [email protected] with 1G DDR, Geforce 5200, 80G IDE HDD UDMA, GA-8S648 motherboard.

This brings back so many memories of hours fighting with dos and 9x to get Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis to have working sound via the speakers.
  • @linuxameteur
The website straight up looks like it was made in 2005. Big props to this guy.
  • @grimrhea5459
"but everything goes wrong" yep, definitely a Michael MJD video (I wasn't expecting it to go right tbh)
  • Thanks for the link to the service pack! Your videos have been tickling my retro fancy in reliving a bunch of operating systems from yesteryear. I actually just downloaded the ISO recently to NT4 Workstation.
  • @Saber_Nico
7:04 I knew it the moment I saw that font, MJD will say something about it lol
  • @presidentkiller
The boot screen modification is a little more difficult than just opening the file in Paint. The boot screen in Windows 9x is actually a LOGO.SYS file. You CAN edit it in Paint and your changes will be visible the next time you start Windows, but the progress bar at the bottom will lose its animation. I honestly don't know how to modify it without messing it up.

Only in a Michael MJD video can installing a service pack require more effort than interstellar travel.
