Carrickfergus and Belfast Titanic Quarter

We make the thirty-minute journey by train from Carrickfergus to Belfast's Yorkgate station. It's then another half and hour or so to walk down to the River Lagan, over the bridge at the Lagan Weir and so into the "Titanic Quarter" on the Queen's Island part of east Belfast.

It's a place where you could easily spend a whole day; strolling around the harbour and the surrounding mixture of old and very new buildings. We spent some three hours at the Titanic Experience itself - which isn't solely about the famous ship. The audio-visual displays, static artefacts and interactive experiences take you through the history of Belfast, and especially its people and industrial development. The narratives are balanced and objective. There is, of course, plenty on shipbuilding and the feats of engineering which culminated in the creation of the liners "Titanic" and "Olympic".

Your ticket for the Titanic Experience (the big museum) also includes admission to the White Star tender "Nomadic" which is in dry-dock nearby.

We especially enjoyed calling in at the Dock Cafe, which is run by volunteers and payment is made by donation - you put in a box whatever you think you should pay. The apple and cinnamon scones were a delight!
