As the launch of our new Enksail Orion 49 sailboat approaches, we have to decide on the colours and upholstery for a comfortable yacht interior, so in this week’s video we do a humorous deep dive into boat upholstery, cushions, and fabrics.

For the first time, we work with an interior designer who specializes in yacht interiors and fabrics, then tour a factory to see how yacht upholstery, cushions and mattresses are made and what materials are best. If you’ve ever decorated a place ashore with your partner, you'll see that doing the same thing for a boat can be just as challenging!

Looking really good! As for how to stay married while choosing boat upholstery, that's easy. The man has to take control of the situation, and say, "Whatever you think, honey. Looks good to me!"
  • Good choice, the navy and the combination with the burgundy/gold look great, and the Fabrick (what do they call it) looks so durable. well done.

Hi Paul & Sheryl. We have that white mesh netting underneath our mattress in the main cabin and guest cabin. It's excellent and helps breathability and therefore stops mould. We also have a latex topper on our mattress which we love because it breaths so well and we don't get hot. Cheers Bryan & Denise (willow II)

The title made me lol. Funny. We met briefly at the Annapolis boat show. I was one in a long line to have my minute or two. Knowing I only had a brief encounter, I crafted my words efficiently so not to be one of those that thought themselves important. I breezed thru my statement of my sailing experience due to YT-ers like you with praises of your channel. Paul looked over my shoulder during my speech completely uninterested as I sped thru my prepared statement. That stuck with me. Finally meeting my sailing YT stars was big for me, obviously a task to endure for you. Maybe it was a tough morning, who knows. Enjoy your fabrics and textures on your new boat.
  • Diana, your input was priceless. Vyva Fabrics InStyling In & Out is the candy shop for fabric choices. I love the chosen fabrics and colors. I'm so glad you didn't opt for the blue/green. Although, I loved the first blues the best, which coordinated with your countertops, I think your final decision will enhance the mahogany. 👏 Neptune Nautical Comforts IMO certification is something that would be of paramount importance to me. An IMO/MED certification is proof that, if a fire incident occurs on a vessel, these materials possess sufficient fire-retardant capabilities to stop or otherwise slow down the spread of a fire. These tests also ensure these materials don’t release toxic or environmentally harmful gases when burning or exposed to high heat. Thank you for sharing these excellent sources. You chose wisely. Bravo!

He decides on the boat and technical details. She decides on the cozy interior. No problem.
  • Make sure to view these fabrics in the lighting you have inside the boat. The color spectrum of interior lights determines how they will actually look. What's also important to realize is that the mahogany in the interior will influence the colors (simply by reflection of interior and exterior light against it); so it's best to also take these fabrics inside the boat once all the lights are ready. I wouldn't use to dark & unsaturated colors as they can become dark/colorless see for example (where the blue becomes dark grey: youtu.be/Hvt0MY1OwMY?si=okv6l4XgU9iedrhk&t=475

So excited for you both on your new boat! Look forward to seeing it in its final version.

Unless you are strapped for cash Latex is a no brainer. Our antique lounge was latex. When re-upholstered we went with the "best" stuff which wasn't latex. Our 1929 lounge suite turned from the most comfortable one we ever had to just ordinary.
  • We went with silicone upholstery for our indoor couches. It's durable and wipes clean.

Great choices on the colours!!! Especially the chevron for the pillows😎
  • @beaudwayful
Another great video I never thought that watching your next boat being built would be this interesting. Looking forward to the Launch!
  • Thank you for sharing your design process, ultimately as long as you both like your choices, that's all that matters. It is also astounding that there are so many options on cushion and mattress material - it would be hard for me to do in just one day. I can't wait to see launch and how lovely everything will be.
  • @gregsutton2400
You are doing the industries involved in construction a great service. They are very impressive.
  • @JohnSmith-cx7zt
I can't wait to see the fabric interior ,design in the new boat.
  • Very informative indeed! Thanks for showing. I’m a believer in springs, but latex ought to be next best.
  • @ashley-tm1uk
memory foam cushions and mattresses are the best . but, it is most important to include an adequate top layer of breathable ( natural ) material before covering with leather or fabric…i e , a thick quilted cotton layer allows air to flow… love the new yacht design!
  • @Cousin.
LOL OK, admittedly I haven’t watched the video yet, but looking at the title, the obvious easy instant answer is: Let HER choose!
