My Amputation Story!

Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel has documented my journey adjusting to life with a visible disability as an amputee, and continues to be a haven to discuss physical and mental health!

  • As someone with a disability, I cannot tell you how much less stressful it can be to have less space to have to take care of. I sometimes feel "less than" my other friends because they all have houses and are married and traveling and living a life and whatnot...and I'm just chillin' everyday in my tiny little junior one bedroom apartment resting and doing what my body tells me it needs to do. But at the same time knowing that if I had a big house that it would kill me either financially and/or physically to have to take care of it so I'm happy knowing I have just enough space for me, my two cats, and what I need to be content. Congrats on the new house! Can't wait to see what new adventures you go on in your brand new city!

I moved 50 miles away from the city I had lived in for 45 years. The relief of knowing I wasnā€™t going to run in to anyone I knew was amazing. Itā€™s been 7 years, and it has consistently turned out to be such a good decision in so many ways. I hadnā€™t realized how much energy I was spending countering bad memories until I wasnā€™t anymore.

As another amputee it looks like a smart move to me, less work ,less hassle, easier to clean, you don't need a mansion, there's such a thing as too big for one person

A single level home, a yard for the dogs and getting rid of "stuff". Bliss level attained! Maybe it's the editing, maybe it's the lighting, but Jo seems so happy and looks so energized. Fix the chewed molding, love the puppies, find some non-wooden chew toys šŸ˜‰ and probably stay home with them until they know that this is THEIR home, it is safe and Jo will be there for them. BTW I am a longtime ThredUp user and have always been satisfied with their product and customer service. Love Jo's choices!
  • Sophie's face when you told about her chewing the door frame she looked like mom don't tell them šŸ˜…

Oh,Jo, take care of yourself. Moving is almost as great a hassle as dealing with a loss in the family.
  • @Kinsfire
As an arthritis sufferer (and my wife is as well), I DEFINITELY understand your dislike of stairs. I had times where my knee would insist I stop halfway up the stairs in the old house.

As a woman who has gone through divorce as well, I hear you when you say "divorce is hard" It literally tosses your life on it's head! I understand you needing to move away and feeling unhappy where you were, I myself did the same, moving to a different Country after meeting my now Husband. You go girl! You do you, I hope you feel at peace coming in the future as you settle into your new place and new surroundings. I also understand when you say you're nervous. I felt the same, questioning myself if I was making the right choice etc. My best wishes to you, keep us updated on how you're doing <3

I moved from my hometown after a bad breakup for similar reasons. Starting over in a new city was tough for a couple of years. As an introvert it was tough making new friends. But eventually I made some great friends and successfully rebooted my life. You can do it!šŸ‘šŸ»
  • Picking up and moving to a new city is so intimidating!! Iā€™m so proud of you for doing it! šŸŽ‰šŸ’œ

I just... Thank you Jo for making this little update video. You quite literally just helped me realize that me moving back in with my parents isn't a step backwards in my healing journey, but a step forward. Because like I've been living in the same area for the last several years, and there are A LOT of memories lingering around this city. And like a decent chunk of those are traumatic ones thanks to the parasitic woman that briefly entered my life. Moving back to my childhood home is gonna give me the space I need to recover from burnout and just let me be free of these memories. I've been apprehensive towards this move, but now I'm actually looking forward to it more. Thank you Jo for your kind words and all the other wonderful things you do, and I hope you have a lovely day!

I think the one stress, one my wife expresses given her MS, is the concern for medical support. Having finally established working relationships with doctors that (you understand this well, I've seen) ACTUALLY BELIEVE HER, she is really loath to risk moving and having to start all over, and finding that the best docs "aren't accepting new patients at this time". So I'm curious if in the future you might talk about that part of a move like this.
  • @DigitalPetrol
My wife, to our financial detriment, LOVES ThreadUp. Congrats on a great sponsor and thanks for another great episode. GL with the move.

So glad you took the chance to change up things! Divorce is a horrible experience, and living with any disability is a balancing act of independence and social quality. Those of us who experience both are "blessed" with a load of stress. I am glad you have Sophie and foster dogs to help focus you, and that you placed yourself in a clean slate location. Love your videos, and your honesty about your emotions. Keep up the great work and take care of yourself, stay healthy, and, luck being on your side, may you find happiness beyond your wildest dreams.
  • @kimmacdonald7527
I like the paint jobs Jo. Very cool. Don't overdo things during your move. Wishing you good luck for a smooth move day and getting settled in to your new place with your furbabies.
  • @lenablanc7162
I applaud you for this hard decision. Moving can be dreading so it could have been very easy to just say, no I stay here. But you listened to your needs and wellbeing and made the call to change something. That's very brave and strong ā¤
  • @Maria.Mirabella
I wish you the best of luck on your moving. And always remember: we're here for you whenever you need us. ā¤
  • @paulanull8731
So much of what you said Jo reflected quite a bit about dealing with my physical issues, limitations? Problem health?...you name it. Every time I watch you exploring your particular problems etc I learn something to help me. Thank you.
  • @leahwilson9152
Aww all the clothes you bought are so cute! I live in a 700 sq ft apartment and I always find myself missing things like having laundry in unit and like a specific studio space and wanting a kitchen island (because in my head a ā€œrealā€ adult has a kitchen island) but in the same thought I have to remind myself that this apartment is close to the river surrounded by beautiful greenery. Plus I hate doing laundry so i would probably procrastinate worse if it was in my apartment lol
  • @superkagome
Love the wall decals you painted!! Looks great
