MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - Welcome to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia! Today we’re going to answer the question - what is Australian Food? This is my first trip to Australia, so I’m excited to explore and to eat my way through Melbourne.

Thank you to all my friends in the video:
Huge thank you to Chef Nick and Tess from HER Melbourne (her.melbourne/) for hosting me in Melbourne and for taking me around.
Chef Nick: www.instagram.com/nick_bennett_sourdough/
Tess: www.instagram.com/_tessstewart/

Also a huge thank you to Sofia Levin (www.instagram.com/sofiaklevin/) for showing us some of the best food in Melbourne!

Here’s the full Australian food tour:

1: South Melbourne Market - goo.gl/maps/6Vefo5Ez1gNeDP5E6?entry=yt
We’re starting out at South Melbourne Market to try some of the local foods available. Starting with jam donuts, meat pies, seafood, a quick oyster shot, and finally the legendary dim sim!

2. Industry Beans - goo.gl/maps/ZEnA2so2xScVQ4CM9?entry=yt
Next up on this Australian food tour we’re having coffee - and in Melbourne they take coffee culture seriously.

3. Terror Twilight - goo.gl/maps/CcBrVwo1qrdZGECM6?entry=yt
Just like coffee culture, Australian brunch culture is very strong, and they have influenced the world with brunch, and of course - avocado toast.

4: Big Esso (Mabu Mabu) - goo.gl/maps/5WrjENeqZS8VojrU7?entry=yt
I wouldn’t want to make a video about what Australian food is without original indigenous Australian food. Big Esso is one of the few true Australian restaurants where Chef Nornie Bero from the Torres Straits serves modern Australian dishes using only local ingredients. Emu, saltbush, and green ants!

5: The Napier Hotel: goo.gl/maps/8VguVAZWeVJFMBoM7?entry=yt
Another part of Australian food culture is the Australian pub. Along with a classic Aussie meat pie, chicken parma (or kangaroo parma), don’t miss the giant Bogan Burger.

6: Gerald's Bar - goo.gl/maps/eJGXgUfKB3fvqXxo7?entry=yt
Next up on this food tour we’re going to a local neighborhood wine bar, a favorite in Melbourne.

7: Supper Inn - goo.gl/maps/rKnZMu8uNzRCrX9y5?entry=yt
Lastly, one of the biggest parts of Australia is the diversity and people from around the world who have migrated to Australia, including many Chinese. Melbourne is home to a substantial Chinatown and we’re eating at one of the absolutely classics.

Although there’s so much more to learn, this was an introduction to learning what Australian food is!

Never thought I’d see Mark Weins here in Australia. This feels surreal.

Just wanted to clarify. Kangaroos are NOT a feral pest, they are a native animal to Australia. They form an integral part of the ecosystem in Australia. I studied environmental science and work in conservation and land management in Australia. It is true that eating kangaroo in Australia is a more sustainable form of meat than beef. Actual feral animals introduced to Australia that are non native and overgraze landscapes include rabbits, goats, deer, pigs and a few others. I absolutely love your videos Mark and watch them religiously. Since I live in Australia, I did think that the choices of food places for this episode were a bit average. To end on a positive note, I’m happy you are in oz and creating content here!
  • Oh Mark. You got played. The first bite of a meat pie is always a small, tentative one, just enough to let the steam out in the filling, so as to do a temp check so you DON'T burn your mouth. Loved this video. Hope you come back soon!
  • such a polite guy, he will eat anything unless its outright inedible

How brave of you to tackle Australia, Mark. Modern Australian food is a fusion of all the cultures and cuisines that have migrated here made with the best ingredients, all grown here. Australia has been known to be a chefs paradise, there isnt anything you cant get here. We have been blessed to be so multicultural.
  • Honestly living in Melbourne most of my life - watching this video really makes you appreciate your home! Melbourne is amazing
  • I saw you eating dinner in the city and waved through the window. I walked past the window of the restaurant and had to double take because I thought I may have been hallucinating when i saw the 'i travel for food' t shirt. Had no idea that Mark was in Melbourne and it was the most surreal thing 😂
  • Really liked that lady. Great smile. She was dope. She made sure she gave flowers to the original people of the land

As an Australian I have to point out that the "real" Australian meat pie/sausage roll/dimmie experience is from a petrol station or lunch bar. It won't be as good as what mark had but it's what most people would eat. The versions they showed in this video were more upmarket fancier versions. P.s I've never actually met anyone call tomato sauce dead horse.

Mark, You are a Respectful Class act. I would love to see Ying and Micah enjoy the food as well. Please stay safe💚
  • As a New Zealander, the best meat pies are from small business bakeries - cheap and delish! Loved the video, would love to see you visit NZ!

  • I’ve never seen anyone maul a pie like that 😂😂. That’s a well enjoyed meal.
  • @RemyBonnici
The way you ate that pie wasn't far off the old pie in the face gags only you were doing it to yourself! Great vid!
  • As usual what an entertaining video! Australian food is a new(ish) world interpretation of old world cuisine with so much creativity, generosity and taste, Mark does an amazing job in his interpretation and illustration and his co-host is also knowledgeable, charming and charismatic! Works up an appetite...🤤
