USA Gymnastics high performance technical lead, Chellsie Memmel, and strategy lead, Alicia Sacramone Quinn, discuss Simone Biles' comeback, what they're looking for during the 2023 U.S. Core Classic competition, and their thoughts on the petition process for athletes to make future camps and the Worlds team if they're not able to compete or get the scores required.

I have ZERO doubt, Chellsie being in her role had an impact on Simine returning. Chellsie's KIND, CARING, and SENSIBLE approach - putting athletes wellbeing FIRST, in all aspects of the word - is EXACTLY what USAG needed.

They sound so much more knowledgeable than (recent) past leadership. Breath of fresh air.

I'm so glad these two amazing gymnasts are coaching now!

I love these ladies so much, seeing them playing such an important role on improving the environment for the girls makes me so happy. And they are clearly doing a wonderful job.

I'm glad to see these veteran gymnast supporting the new and aspirant Olympians.

I don't know why that lady felt the need to "correct" ASQ and Chellsie, but I love that Chellsie didn't back down yet stayed respectful.
  • Who was that talking from USAG? It’s nice to see Alicia & Chellsie and the positive way they talk about the athletes.

I'm sorry, but who is that on the right jumping in and "managing" the whole situation? Sacramone and Memmel are professionals, and seem to be handling the press just fine. That gave me bad vibes, and was painfully reminiscent of previous eras with coaches and USAG "handling" athletes.

Apparently Alicia and Chellsie need some sort of all-knowing overlord to police their interviews. That woman was so overbearing.

The way Chellsie gave her side eye like "You're really gonna be talking to Jessica like that?!?!......" Time to get rid of her. She made Alicia and Cellsie obviously uncomfortable. No excuse for her to not know the verbiage and treat people disrespectfully.
  • So, if sounds like they're saying if Gabby doesn't compete tomorrow (and she isn't), she cannot petition to Nationals or Worlds selection camp. That makes perfect sense, but also kinda sucks for Gabby if she's competition ready. The problem I think is that it's going to be very upsetting for a LOT of people if she doesn't come back to international competition before trying for an Olympic spot, especially since I think (unless she had MAJOR upgrades), whether or not she competes AA, she would fill a similar role to what she did in Rio, which is really just Uneven Bars. And the difference between Rio 2016 and Paris 2024 is that, between Suni, Simone, Jordan, Shilese, and others- we don't have room for an UB-only specialist. She will need to be a competitive AAer (over Suni, even) at this point to merit an Olympic spot if she's not competing at a Worlds before that.

Jessica is AWESOME. Who is that lady? How rude! (In my Stephanie Tanner voice).

Love that Chellsie acknowledged how fucked up the Worlds qualification process is
  • @broadwaybeat
The lady interrupting was so embarrassing for USAG…not a good look

Who is the woman interjecting? Is she White House counsel? Optics lady, optics - she sounds secretive and shady talking over the candid, relatable, likable chellsie and alicia. Excellent questioning of dumb-ass rules. Are they really gonna sideline Simone all season if she tweaks an ankle on event 1 and withdraws? Im used to sports like figure skating where you have several events over several different months to qualify score-wise for nationals or Worlds. US Gymnastics feels like you get just a couple - Winter cup in the winter or Classics in August. These youngsters don't get much practice/experience competing on podium with big crowds in big arenas. The veterans with college experience (or extensive elite experience) have a big edge in the mental game. Shout out to Jessica O'Beirne being heavily quoted in a cnn article today. Good job.

Yeah the left hand and the right hand are not on the same page here 😂
