The Great Ocean Road - Road Trip

Published 2023-03-11
The Great Ocean Road is an Australian National Heritage listed 240-kilometre stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Allansford - and should be on your "must-do" list if it isn't already.

We started our trip in Melbourne after attending the World Recreational Fishing Conference which was a thought-provoking three days that highlighted the importance of water quality and protecting our marine environments. Our first stop was Torquay where we had brunch and checked out the National Surfing Museum. We also visited the sundial along the surf coast walk, Point Danger and the World Famous surf spots at Winki Pop and Bells beach.

Next up was Aireys Inlet, Split point lighthouse, the Great Memorial Arch and Lorne where we spent our first night.

On day two we changed our itinerary to take advantage of the perfect weather and headed straight down the Great Ocean Road through Apollo Bay, past Cape Otway, Castle Cove Lookout and visited the stunning Gibson Steps and walked the beach in perfect conditions. Then onto the 12 Apostles, Thunder Cave, the Razorback, Muttonbird Island and Loch Ard Gorge. We could not have had better weather and conditions to see these stunning coastal landscapes and you must do it as well! We then returned to Apollo Bay to spend the night as we had planned to visit the Treetop Adventure park and waterfalls - but we will have to see them next trip ;-)

Day 3 - The southern change arrived with rain showers but we managed small windows to visit the Cape Otway lighthouse, which you can go to the top of and it should certainly be on your itinerary as we. You will see the difference a day can make with the weather as we revisited a few of the sights from the previous day. The Arch was closed, unfortunately - but we checked our London Bridge, The Grotto, Peterborough lookout, the Bay of Martyrs and the Bay of Islands - which really concludes the main seascape attractions. We stayed overnight in Port Campbell at a lovely Airbnb - The House on The Hill. You can also visit the Sow & Piglets brewpub for a beer and a feed.

Day Four saw us head to Warrnambool which is a lovely seaside city and we also visited the historic town of Koroit where we happened across "Noodledoof Brewing and Distilling co." for lunch and a beer. We also had a look at Tower Hill which is an inactive volcano and wildlife reserve. Then onto our final destination of Port Fairy which is a wonderful seaside town for our last night. We hope you enjoy the video and trip as much as we did. There are so many more places that we did not have time for this trip - so we will be back. Feel free to add your "must-do" spots in the comments below if you have already explored this wonderful part of our country and we will add them to our next itinerary ;-)
