Phylicia Rashad was nominated for a Tony Award for her portrayal of Ester in Gem of the Ocean. Here in a dramatic reading created for August Wilson: The Ground on Which I Stand, she enacts a scene in which Ester reveals the existence of the spiritual and symbolic City of Bones.

    It is incredible that a 2 minute piece of a performance can move me to tears. Not simply watered eyes. Heavy, falling, continuous tears. Thank you, Ms. Rashād, for such delivery of the legendary playwright August Wilson's work; and for reminding me what an immense talent you are. This scene is actually my introduction to "Gem of the Ocean". These 2+ mins means more to me than I can detail here. Thank you, PBS. You are forever a staple in my life. Powerful.
