I think what it boiled down to in the end was that Ed realised that Liz could be pushed to a point but would eventually snap back, especially where Ryleigh was concerned. He doesn't want that, he wants a woman who is totally submissive, agrees with him about everything and keeps telling him how great he is. Anyway, I hope the show is done with him and he is left to fade into the obscurity he richly deserves.
