I find it odd that people are doing presentations on the great Patois and don't mention the first universal ambassador of the Jamaican language and culture - Ms Lou (Louise Bennette-Coverly).

Damn glad to hear a Jamaican explain it,,,,,,,, a lot of people do the eurocentric,,, pseudo scientific analysis of the Jamaican language,,,,,, I'm so sick of that
  • As a Jamaican , I find this to be the only authentic explanation on here.
  • Have always known this for a long time as a lot of patois has Nigerian and Ghanaian words in it ..
  • @TsedekBen
Jamaican lanwig form words base upon agglutinative morpheme a continuity of african linguistic rules.

Since I was a kid I felt attraction to Rasta culture. Thank you for this videos, very helpful! Can I ask you to help us overstand the meaning of Bob Marley's songs?
  • English is Jamaica’s language officially but patois is the Jamaican dialect . English language can be confusing sometimes..

Excellent! I think European schools/colleges should include general linguistics as part of their required curricula from the earliest grade levels. It will teach respect for all languages, and to not hold any language as superior to any other one. Americans in particular need to learn to deal more graciously with people who have a foreign accent, not to mention getting over their fear of actually learning another language. A knowledge of the Caribbean, South American, African, Asian, and Oceanic creole languages would also be helpful. Thanks for your video! Bless up, mon! 🙏🇯🇲🙏🇺🇸😊😎👍

All of the African people who worship Jamaica going to come on this..
  • @TsedekBen
Dat instead that. African language like Ibo replace the letter D wid a T.

Its frustrating to see that there are Jamaicans who are so staunchly against legalizing this language because thry are "afraid it will have no application outside of Jamaica".... We have a serious problem in Jamaica where there are people who can't communicate in good English... why should we care about what the rest of the world think? Recognizing Patwa will make it easier for Jamaicans and non-Jamaicans to directly translate the languages into other languages especially English... People really think backwards sometimes and its infuriating. People are more willing to suffocate the language rather than embrace it.

Which part of Africa does "big up" comes from❓
  • As always limited bites. Missing from this historical note the other indentured salves Indians, Germans, Chinese, Spanish, Syrians to the historical artists some alive and those whom passed on. Be more diligent narrating our Jamaicans cultural history. Fi real.

Your headline is somewhat misleading. The Jamaican accent is the Standard Jamaican English accent. An accent is different from a dialect. The Jamaican patios is a dialect.
