If anyone is interested in more about his designs, I highly recommend Game Maker's Toolkit videos on it, "Nintendo - Putting Play First" and "Super Mario 3D World's 4 Step Level Design". Don't worry, these are not lectures, but very entertaining video essays. Another nice video by Vox, summarizing the most essential point on this topic and presenting it well.
