Hundreds gathered to remember former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst in a public memorial over the weekend. The beauty queen and lawyer passed away Jan. 30 at age 30 and her memory was honored in a celebration of life service at a North Carolina church she used to attend. According to the Charlotte Observer, Kryst's mother, April Simpkins, delivered an emotional speech paying tribute to her most admirable qualities.

    I didn’t know her but I’m so heart broken that she took her own life, she was special and seemed so sweet. It really saddens me that she was in such pain 😢💕💕

    What makes this death particularly sad is the amount of potential that she had. She could have been the first Black female Supreme Court Justice. Treatment resistant depression is awful.

    I am so sad to see this. I so wish there could have been a way to help her with this before it got to this point. She was so beautiful and I was shocked to know that reaching 30 puts so much on women to feel they're running out of time in the industry. Man this just mortified me, that too be that beautiful, and sweet but unable to see your true worth to everyone on the outside. Even though I did not know you personally your infectious energy and willingness to help others will always make me grateful I came acrossed your YouTube channel.
