This is a video I produced to highlight the beauty of both the railroad and the fall colors of north central New Mexico and south central Colorado. It was filmed at various points along the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad during a week long stay in Chama, New Mexico in October 2022, and is dedicated to the men and women, past and present, who have and continue to help preserve and keep the history of Narrow Gauge Mountain Railroading alive though out New Mexico and Colorado.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a National Historic Landmark that moves. At 64-miles in length, it is the longest, the highest and most authentic Narrow Gauge steam railroad in North America, traveling through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Rocky Mountain West.
To learn a bit more about the unique history of this railroad and its truly historic contribution to the development of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, check the link below:

  • In 1999 my wife and I took her parents on this trip, riding from Antonito to Chama, in October also. We had several periods of snow and during one bout my father-in-law and I were out on the open gondola. i turned around and he had the biggest grin, from ear-to-ear. He was also deaf (WWII artillery accident) but he still enjoyed the ride immensely. Sadly, both have since passed away, but I still remember that trip to this day.
  • The video quality is outstanding! It was really cool to see the trains moving around the yard as well as the water tank being filled. Steam engines are quite remarkable to see, especially when operating. We enjoy seeing them at the Green Bay National Railroad Museum in Wisconsin.

I've done the DSNGRR twice but not this one; gotta do it one day. I think you have the right idea for when to visit that area. I gotta push my trips back to September, maybe early October. Thanks for all the impressive Fall scenery, cloudy, rainy weather and all. And thanks for a fun virtual train ride!!
  • Again, history and big views! The aspens were stunning, you guys timed it great. So interesting to see the way those trains are put together, incredible for its day.

I got the special privilege to ride in the doghouse on Cumbres & Toltec 484 on the photo charter to prove its effectiveness in tandem with a caboose
