Mark Martin is well known for driving the red white and blue #6 Ford Thunderbird/Taurus NASCAR Winston cup car. In 1998 Mark had a home run year winning several races, many of which were done in the same car called JR-51. Jack Roush chassis 51 was built for the 1998 season and ran until the end of 1999 when it was converted to a 2000 Taurus body for testing. Somehow it ended up under someones lean to in Rockingham NC where it sat abandoned for 20 years. Landon Best here grew up a huge Mark Martin fan and stumbled across this car for sale. Once he was able to validate what it was he quickly got the ball rolling on returning it to its legendary 1998 configuration with painstaking detail. Mark hops in, fires up that Ford C3 engine, and paces the NASCAR Cup series field at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This car also coincidentally won the very first race at this track in 98. Mark has not been on a racetrack in this capacity since he retired. He sits down with us to reflect on his experience after the race and has some profound things to say. UPDATE: Mark did end up purchasing JR51 from Landon to put in his Batesville Museum which you can see in this video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXFIwkkZd5U Something you may see on tv for 45 seconds before the race may have a huge awesome story behind it like this. We’re super grateful for NBC and NASCAR for allowing us to use the on track footage. Just an awesome day. If you haven’t seen the other videos we’ve done with Mark you should check them out!
  • I can’t believe it’s been 24 years already. Mark acts like he’s just an average guy surprised how the fans reacted. He doesn’t realize he’s a legend.
  • @BigDave539
"It was like 24 years disappeared" I'm not sure how much more of a compliment he could have given to Landon.
  • Long time Mark Martin fan. He never bitched complained or whined just drove the shot out of a race car. If you were faster than him, he ddaced you fair and let you get by. Sound of that motor brought chills and tears. Unbridled power. Thanks for doing the story.

Omg seeing him in that seat! The Hurricane 6 M.M. No donuts No burnouts Just 100% focused on what ever the car gave him every race. Awesome!
  • Watching Mark give that thumbs up as he pulled down pit lane gave me CHILLS down my spine. Such an awesome example of a human being. Love him so much! ❤️💙

It's hard to smile for 46 minutes straight but it's worth the muscle cramps.
  • Purple hair lady is absolutely speaking for all us. Hats off to Landon for bringing back a piece of history and sharing it with Mark and all of us. Seeing Mark relive his memories in this car is priceless. Keep up the awesome videos Stapleton!!
  • Man this video couldn’t get any better for me. My favorite driver, favorite paint scheme and my favorite era of nascar. It’s like I was 10 years old again.
  • my baseball coach had cancer, his last wish was to meet mark. my dad worked at daytona and set it up with marks team, so we all went and met him sometime in like 2004. mark was so nice, spent so much time with us and shook my hand like 20 times. my family still talks about how nice and 'normal' he was, he really was jus like an average guy. super cool memory.

I have much respect for Mark Martin, for what he accomplished and how he did everything in a gentleman's way. This is a great video.
  • @jdhaase1417
Landon took the restoration serious. No corners cut. Love listening to his knowledge of the car. Great job Landon!
  • @Jeffbambam
Mark Martin, a racers racer ! Much respect! I agree with Mark, this channel touches on things that matter to us old school racing nerds, I can't wait to read his book .
  • Wow...not very often, if at all, you see a car as complete and original as this. I miss 90's Nascar
  • Mark Martin "You are knocking the lights out" enough said. Congratulations Mitchell and Logan.
  • 42:37, Mark Martin says "every video you do your knocking the lights out". Wow, what a complement from a legend. Thanks for the hard work Stapleton42.

I don't get jealous of Youtubers except for you. What a freaking dream!
  • This video should go viral. This is one of racing’s greatest moments captured in my opinion. Mark Martin will always be a class act. Great job.
