Something that goes unsaid too often is when Magic's HIV was made public, he was shunned by a lot of people and players who were supposed to be his friends. Larry Bird was one of the first calls he got asking him how he was holding up and let him know whatever he needs, he's there.

Magic shortchanged himself. The vote was 63-3 for Larry. If people are wondering why Larry won so convincingly, it's because Larry was credited for what was at the time the biggest turnaround in NBA history. The Celtics went 29-53 in 1979 and then 61-21 in Larry's rookie season.

In the 80's you had Bird and Magic in basketball. Wayne Gretzky in hockey. And Joe Montana and Jerry Rice in football. Arguably the best decade in sports.
