    The 2” x 1/2” flat bar is a badly sill step from the corner of a railcar. The square steel item is a journal box lid that covered the old friction bearing/waste packing/oil on the end of a railcar axle from the days before roller bearings. Retired railway car repairman here

    They asked the old engineer how many derailments he'd had. He said he couldn't remember. It was too hard to keep track.

    Very interesting history. That piece of mangled flat stock may have been part of a hand rail. Awesome finds though. Thank you for sharing with us.
  • Interesting - there's a similar video on youtube examining the Ashtabula disaster site, which comes up with all manner of railroad car parts left from the wreck. But, please be careful on the railroad - technically you're trespassing walking on the track, and it is shockingly amazing how quiet an engine can be coming up behind you......
