Colonial Williamsburg is home to the historic Duke of Gloucester Street which runs directly through the old Colonial Capitol of Virginia.

Many popular and well-known homes and buildings from the 18-century are found along this area here, including places like The Governor’s Palace, The Capitol Building, Raleigh Tavern, The Post Office, Prentis Store, Silversmith, Charlton’s Coffeehouse, Merchant Square, and the homes and stores of many of the early residents of the old city, all found up and down this famous road and throughout the area.

Thoughtfully executed and often positioned behind each of these carefully restored structures, is a semi-other world of its own. Not as often seen, when traversing along Colonial Williamsburg’s main city street and pathways that intersect one another, but equally stunning to discover.

The architects and designers from that early time period crafted and positioned many intricate designs, patterns, and sophisticated yet organic layouts, within the landscapes they looked at and treated as aesthetic artwork.

The restoration efforts that continue to take place inside Colonial Williamsburg hold up this amazing skillset, allowing it to stand true as it once did, here in the modern-day. Yet many of these inventive areas are not as easily seen, and finding them along and nearby Williamsburg’s most frequented route, is truly a visual treasure hunt.

In this episode of Quest Capsule, we take you along with us to see many of the hidden gems that lie behind the Colonial structures laid out amongst the city, and in and around the Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg Virginia.

An exploration we were thrilled to take during a couple of our latest visits to Colonial Williamsburg. We hope you can take the time to come along with us to take in the sights and sounds.

Years ago, we found that back path with the creek, benches, and small step bridge. We sat there to eat a picnic lunch with my small children and my parents. It was so nice to stay in the outdoors where the kids could wander and not sit still in chairs to wait for their food.

  • Thank you for taking us on truly the paths less traveled. You absolutely captured the charm, details and traquility of this magical area.
  • We have been wandering the backyards for decades! Love discovering new things. The Catherine Orr and Taliaferro-Cole gardens are two of our favorites to wander, but it's all wonderful!

Do this back garden walk in the spring. It is stunning. Finish at the Governor Palace and see the tulip gardens in all their glory.

I just discovered your videos. They are wonderful! I watched several today doing chores. They are like a professional documentary. Your choice of music, the video, and you have a great speaking voice really hooked me! I grew up very close to Williamsburg and go back every year and enjoy wandering the colonial streets and never tire of their beauty!
