Elmer Roush forge welding a 1090 bit on to a tomahawk

Elmer Roush was the demonstrator at the Alex Bealer Blacksmith Association 2023 Christmas party where he forged a traditional trade tomahawk. This video just focuses on the forge welding of the 1090 steel bit for the tomahawk point. For the demonstration, Elmer uses a striker instead of a powerhammer, demonstrating the traditional master and apprentice working together to efficiently forge a work piece. Elmer guides the stiker with a combination of his hammer (the stiker hits where ever Elmern's hammer strikes) and voice commands (to striker harder, normal blows, etc).

  • Love how the anvil moves... Also notice to the newbs: no dry-smacking the anvil with the hammer, no wasted movement. Setting it down, or changing the grip, sure, but none of that "keeping the rhythm" BS.
