Just want to give more context as a Chinese. I was born late 90s and until I was 5, the cartoon version of Journey to the West was my fav cartoon. All my toys are Wukong or the staff (more of a club) that he wields. There is also a drama of Journey to the West by human actors that is SUPER popular in China for a very long time. During the summer holiday time, half of the tv channels are playing the drama. So, you can say that every single person in China knows this story well. Even more, it is considered one of four must read classical novel schools require students to read. Yes, you will see questions in your exams asking you about this story. As you can already tell, this story is very "official" in some ways. Usually it tries to tell a positive story aiming to inspire students and the public. But this game is delving into the dark side of this story, those people usually don't talk about or those officials want you to ignore (the reason it is called "black" myth), which is the most exicting part to me. This is also the first promising AAA level game that is done by a Chinese developer for such a long time. I really hope it is good and am looking forward to it.

I was one of those people who was waiting for this game to drop since the first trailer 2020. Again. I didn’t know saying that I am one those people would trigger some of y’all.. is that something to brag about it? Seriously!

Commenting as a Malaysian Chinese. This is a tale Chinese people are super familiar with as said by others. I couldn't help but notice how little elements of buddhism is there. The original tale is rather religious. It's done by a China company so it is no surprise plus I think many Buddhists will probably object to inclusion of Buddhist deities in a game. It does not shy away from Chinese folk religion and Taoism though it seems. I see a dragon and dragons are gods in Chinese folk religion. Also, Wukong himself is a deity. There are some Chinese in Malaysia that worship him so you can find temples featuring him here. This seems like a very cool game so I am not criticising it, merely providing more context.

I read the book last year and I really recommend it to people. It's honestly really fun and the world, monsters, gods, demons and stories just make it read like a great fantasy novel (but unlike modern fantasy worlds its based not just on years of worldbuilding but on hundreds of years of it through legends and myth). You might be scared by it being from the 16th century and thus hard to read but consider that since you'll probably be reading a modern translation the language by default will be slightly modernized to make it easy to digest for today's reader. The character of Wukong especially make the story very entertaining since he starts as a kind of anti-hero and while being strong, courageous and determined he is also really arrogant, aggresive and rash. He constantly gets into quarrels and trouble but then overgoes a transformation throughout the story which overall just makes for a great story.

I'm From Belgium and from 68 which is The Year of the Monkey! And weirdly enough the description of Chinese Zodiac animals portrays your own. I could and can relate to The Great Sage. I have a huge back piece, Sun Wu Kong tattoo, and read all three volumes of The Journey. I'm an uncle and I love telling my brother's kids many of Monkey's adventures. I liked the series as well from 1978 to 1980, that cracks me up every time I see it. I'm 56 and still game, I'm from the generation that was 36 when we were 10 and 10 when we were 36! This game looks very authentic and it'll be a blast to retake the Journey. Monkey also got me into Buddhism and martial arts. Monkey! , My guardian Angel!!!! I lived in Thailand for a while and when the locals saw my tattoo, they all spontaneously started to socialise.
  • UE 5 too.. a truly next-gen souls game.. Damn, I really hope it delivers. It looks so damn good.

Amazing video, and congratulations on your collab with the devs of the game.

Looks fantastic. I've had my eye on this one since it was first announced. I've got such fond memories of the old (Japanese) tv series, Monkey, from when I was a kid, and there was another game, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, based on the same story that was a lot of fun a few years back. I've been meaning to read the book for ages. Guess it's time I got to it!
  • @chrisgoods

  • @ormrinn

  • @dynamicflashy
I’m going to wait for the reviews before getting this one.

Been anticipating this since its first trailer! Earlier this year I watched an animated movie by the name “The monkey king”, and I got all giddy realizing it was about the same protagonist as in this game, with a shape shifting staff and all! That in turn made me really want to read the book before I play this game… so just a couple of trailers about a game that may and may not be finished had me absolutely fascinated about the story of Journey to the west!
