On Monday, Ethiopia signed a deal with Somaliland, a region within Somalia, for access to a port on the Red Sea. This deal didn't go down well with Somalia, accusing Ethiopia of endangering peace of the region. But nonetheless, Ethiopia is persistent; so in this video, we're going to take a look at Somaliland, the new deal, and what might happen next.

CORRECTION: At 2:20, we say 'Italian Somaliland has a population roughly eight times that of British Somaliland'. As the numbers shown demonstrate, this isn't true: today, Somalia (excluding Somaliland) has a population roughly 4 times that of Somaliland. We meant to say 'Italian Somaliland HAD [at independence] a population roughly eight times that of British Somaliland' (inferred from the fact that there were 80,000 voters in the 1960 British Somaliland elections, compared to 600,000 in the 1956 Italian Somaliland elections (source: africanelections.tripod.com/so.html#1961_Constitut…. We hope you nonetheless enjoyed the video!

"Violation against Somalia's unity" What unity?
  • @ifgwelf
Somaliland seems to be doing a better job of governing itself than Somalia 🤷
  • @Baddy187
I have nothing but respect for Somaliland. To create a stable state is never easy, but to do it in Somalia in just a couple of years is impressive. The people there must be strong minded.
  • @nehemiya558
This is a diplomatic lease deal. Ethiopia is trying to gain port access to trade, not to kill people. Africa is still poor because we would rather block each other than grow together. We live in a global world now, where open trade is key for development. Look at Europe, after WWII they realized centuries of fighting each other was stupid. Instead, they began to work together, forming economic unions. Africa on the other hand, we are still stuck in our backwards mindset. Our people are POOR! We need to move FORWARD!

To be fair regardless of Ethiopia, I think Somaliland deserves independence. They definitely have the historical argument with their independence before unification with Somalia and the fact it was a separate colony. Plus the ability of them to have a successful democracy regardless of their economics shows how they can be a legit state.
  • @GeliCarlosJ
Somalia should worry about governing themselves rather than meddle with a land that has governed itself better than them for many many years now & is more of a functioning country & government than themselves.
  • @fredhampton321
Ethiopia, a key East African nation, hosts the African Union. Somaliland aims to strengthen ties, envisioning a strategic alliance with Ethiopia for mutual defense against Somalia's instability. Collaborating militarily is vital for safeguarding both nations and fostering a strong friendship.
  • @andumenged
Good explanation! One correction: Eritrea never prevented Ethiopia from using its ports. It’s the Ethiopian leader Males Zenawi who switched to Djibouti to prevent Eritrea getting any port fees. He publicly said that if Ethiopia continues to use Eritrean ports then Eritrea would benefit more than Ethiopia.,That’s his words. There’s even a video for that.
  • Even though I don’t agree with what Ethiopia’s doing with Nile Dam. Recognising a clearly stable, independent and prosperous Somaliland is a good call. Somaliland needs more mainline recognition since Somalia is the textbook definition of a failed state!
  • @ZackCali
Somaliland is older than much of the baltic states, they been a stable country for 33 years now, I suggest we welcome Somaliland to the UN
  • @rob651
What a great report. Because I closely follow the issue and I can personally see that everything you've reported is unbaised, you got my respect and confidence in TLDR's news. Great Job. Keep it up!! Thank you for the hardwork.
  • @prion42
"what happens next?" Nothing. Somalia hasn't controlled Somaliland for years. What are they going to do about it?
  • @rodag7831
Somaliland revoked and denied the unity between Somaliland and Somalia after the 1988 genocide and subsequent civil war in 1991 to separate from the fraudulent unity in 1st July in 1960. Which is Somaliland believed was a not properly ratified by them. SOMALILAND maintains it was made Independent 26 June 1960 with its population and land demarcated since 1884.
  • Ethiopia is 120 million under poverty, and they see a chance the Somali's red sea and we don't allow them to reach our costs from Samaliland State.🇸🇴🇸🇴💪
  • @user-kb8hp4nt5b
Ethiopia has a population of 120 million soon to be 150. no other country in the world with has this amount of population without a port. Ethiopia needs a port and this deal is good for Somaliland and Ethiopia. If Somalia start using their brain they can see that this deal can benefit the hole region.
  • @sodog44
Somaliland is a far more stable and prosperous place than Somalia ever has been. They should have thier own legitimate place in the international community
  • @ericthurman1050
Its very interesting how many smei autonomous reigions are in north and east Africa. Them and new states. This will be a development for sure.
