You did a fine job Barry, you’re a natural. You have the light touch and slow pace down. It’s going to take reps to build confidence, but you’re headed in the right direction.
  • @subtleartsoapco
Nice first straight razor shave! Honored you chose Mid Cape Barber for your first, thank you! It will get easier, less awkward, the more you practice and become familiar with the razor. The lather looked well hydrated to me. Whole face and neck the first time out and no cuts, absolute win! Look forward to seeing more!
  • @Indyshaver
You cut hair and no blood, that is a win!!! Nice job, I’m really wanting to try one also!
  • @garrylockett
Congratulations on 300 subs Barry, a great achievement and testament to your content. Straight shaving is a quite different art. I straight shave 2-3 times per month really enjoy however only when I set some time for myself. Extremely easy to cut yourself.
  • @ktanner8994
Thumbs up for the courage to do this on camera.
  • @nonamebear1136
You did well. Being gentle and slow is a good practice. When you are starting out, developing the muscle memory is what will improve your skill. Just be patient and keep watching the tutorials. Barber Dave's and such has some great tutorials. Just remember, never push past resistance, it will not be a good time. Thanks for sharing and take care.
  • That’s above my pay grade. Wow looks intimidating, and when you watch someone who knows what they are doing it’s a thing of beauty
  • @Bamaboyshaving
I was truly expecting your video to look like my first… you did your homework. It looks like you at least practiced holding the razor. That is where I failed. I just turned the camera on after I opened the shavette. You did great. Not going to lie to you, as much hell as I caught from my first straight razor videos, I was prepared for a good laugh 😆 watching this video. I did not get to laugh…..I noticed that you ran into the blind spot problem that I have problems with. That is really the only major problem that I’m still running into. It doesn’t help that I bought two huge custom razors to go forward with. Great video. Great shave. Great hold. 300 subs!!!! Thanks for the shoutout! I’m almost at 90! Have a great day bary!

You are definitely braver than I am when it comes to those types of razors. I found myself holding my breath while watching this video because I was nervous for you. But good job and I'm glad you made it through that.
  • @DevanJackson
Your move at 13:55 is probably the best way to deal with that area. Then just switch hands to do the other side the same way (shaving away from the growth towards the ear). Just a matter of doing it a few more times…
  • @robm6772
I was on the edge of My seat 😆
  • Great job on first try, it's ok to be nervous. That is what help you stay cautious and not get cut. Slow and steady until muscle memory is developed
  • @sellitman
You had the alum and the sceptic pencil. If that was me I'd need some cat gut too. Congrats at 300 Members! Well deserved.
  • @douglaslayne1
You did wonderful on your first straight razor shave. Lather looked great, and grip and technique will come. Using your off hand will become easier as well. When I straight razor shave I throw the whole wtg, atg, and xtg out the window. It’s just take my time, enjoy the shave and don’t cut myself up. I guarantee you this. You are not thinking about work, or what’s for dinner, what your kids are doing , or anything else but what that sharp blade is doing right by your neck. You have to be present and in the moment for this type of shave and that what I love about them.
  • @ColletteClassic
Straights are interesting Bary. Definitely much easier if you're proficient with both hands, but no matter which way you slice it, there's just so much excess tool to handle. Watching you get "stuck" around the mouth and neck like that is bringing back so many memories of my first time. I had the exact same troubles and eventually just decided it's not for me. I find a straight to be more of a novelty thing, with DE razors just being so much more manageable and convenient. Kudos to you for filming your first time and deciding to go at it again!
  • @lastshadow9351
Good job! While I haven't fully gone down the straight razor path, I have a bunch of experience with shavettes, Feathers, Kais, Wecks. The shave techniques are the same, but there's less room for errors as those blades more thin and ultra sharp. When I started out I wanted to eliminate the question if my straights were actually shave ready, but then you end up going down the shavette rabbit hole-lol! It takes dedication to get proficient and with that dedication you will overcome the fear. It's like that old saying, "how do you get to Carnegie Hall-practice, practice, practice." I watched a lot of shaves from Frank Stromberg (who has passed), Matti Lindholm, and the Stallion. They make it look easy, but you do pick up some tricks and technics that are very helpful. Take care!
  • Howdy (Moin) Bary 🇺🇸 Nice 1st straight razor shave and what a beautilful razor it is ❤ Once again congratulations for 300 Subs 🎉 Have a great day. Greetings from Germany 👋🏻 Christian
