Novelist Sebastian Faulks has the rare quality of being both literary and popular. He’s best known for his historical novels set in France, and in particular, Birdsong, adapted for the screen and starring Eddie Redmayne. Now for the first time, Faulks has ventured into the future - but not very far - setting his latest novel from 2030, beginning with an experiment at an IVF clinic which challenges ethical boundaries. His 16th novel, ​​The Seventh Son is out now.

    What a delightful conversation. I've loved Sebastian's books since I found 'Birdsong' many years ago, and it's wonderful to see him being so frank about his life and processes here.

    Roger Waters of Pink Floyd lost his father at the Anzio landings. Interesting story, was initially a conscientious objector, on ambulances during the London Blitz, then changed his views.

    At the end of Friday's programme he played a part of the pod cast. Faulks posed a comment that James was also curious about. There is a certain psychologist that answers that question, the same person James likes to dismiss. If we are to have an open mind with the possibility to change it is it not about time that James interviews those that he disagrees with. Perhaps he will find common ground in a lot they believe in. If the BBC are able to get these interviews then the largest on talk programme on radio would have access to.
