Therapist reacts to Happy by NF

Published 2024-03-28
Therapist analyzes the lyrics of Happy by NF to discuss the ways in which it can feel safe for many people to stay stuck in their depression or mental health problems because the unknown of who they would be if they healed is scary. When we listen to this song we have the opportunity to move away from this place of fear and move into a place of imagination.

NF is the most relatable artist I’ve ever listened to. He explains the issues and battles that come from mental health in ways I wish I could. I never know what to say to a therapist. Sometimes I wish I could just hand her a NF song and say “this is pretty much it”

Before you get to far ahead with NF you have to start at the beginning… it’s a journey, you won’t regret it.
  • This is off of Nate's newest album "Hope". And I feel a lot of people miss that this song is actually a song of hope. In the beginning he's lamenting. But let's look towards the end: "Don't know what's around the bend Don't know what my future is But I can't keep on living in Living in my agony, watching my self-esteem Go up in flames acting, like I don't Care what anyone else thinks etc" He's says he CANT keep living in his agony. He CANT keep watching his self esteem go into disrepair etc. IMO the pre chorus at the end is connected to the last chorus. He knows he needs to change. And he's getting better! His children have done so much for him and his mental health.

NF. Is the best. You’ve barely scratched the surface of some of the emotional and amazing songs that he has, hold onto your hats.

"But I can't keep on living in" - Is the single best inversion of a songs message from one of acknowledgment to one of hope and resolve

Also this song beautifully shows generational trauma and how someone has to choose to break that trauma. Basically what he is trying to do with his burdens and struggles. Its amazing.

I found NF at my lowest. His music helped me find the person I was always meant to be. This song always makes me emotional. Great reaction and insight.
  • Coming from a big NF, and knowing many others that have followed him for years now I know you will probably react to Hope, but you should think about looking up and doing the NF journey because over his tracks. There’s this journey that you can go on specific songs where it shows his mental struggles And his growth through it and dealing with it. It can hit a lot harder and the song. Hope is a lot more impactful knowing the past of his songs.

Thanks for reacting to this music video! I’ve always loved NF and the message of his songs, but when I first listened/watched this music video, I was finally convinced that I needed to go to therapy and deal with some childhood wounds. Seeing the little girl experiencing trauma in her childhood and then the flashes forward to seeing her perpetuate the same actions as an adult rocked me to my core! It helped me realize that if I didn’t seek help in addressing my childhood trauma, that I would become the same man that my father was during my childhood and start the cycle of trauma all over again in my future children’s lives. This song is so powerful, and I hope it encourages other people to seek help like it did for me!

This album is what I needed this morning. NF makes having feelings okay and the rational outlook he articulates a real route forward rather than faking it till one makes it.

Depression is addiction. It's so hard to be outside of misery because we miss the demons on our shoulders. There's some kind words they whisper to us that is JUST enough to keep them closer than real people. We don't want the opportunity to hurt others so we listen to the demons that hurt US. In the end, being lonely is the best way (in our heads) but if there is just ONE ray of light breaking the darkness, we can see that there is hope. It's SO hard to reach into that light, SO hard to accept help. But when we do, the healing begins. Like Nate says, the truth is I just can't imagine who I'd be if I was happy. Fantastic song, one of his best, and an amazing and inspirational breakdown. Thank you for bringing awareness, not only to depression in general, but also to MEN suffering depression.
  • Just wait until you hear "how could you leave us" that song hits spot on to home for me, and it gets me even though I have heard it well over 1000 times
