Red Dead Redemption 2 saw Rockstar return to the frontiers of the Wild West for a prequel to the seminal Red Dead Redemption, and as a result, it includes a range of period weaponry from 1899 such as the Smith & Wesson Volcanic Pistol, the Remington Rolling Block Rifle, and the Norwegian 1894 Krag-Jørgensen rifle.
In the above video, Jonathan Ferguson--a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries--breaks down the guns of Red Dead Redemption 2 and compares them to their real-world counterparts..

I like that the high level weapons in rdr1 and 2 are less western-y. It really drives home the message of the sun setting on the wild west

One of the early Volcanic Pistols was so incredibly weak, that someone purchased one in order to "end themselves". The day after they shot themselves in the head, they returned the pistol to the store. There are "weak" pistol calibres, and then there is the Volcanic Pistol. Its in its own class.

A bit of a shame that The Schofield wasn't covered. Not only is it my favourite of the RDR2 revolvers, it also keeps it's real name for a pretty dark reason. The reason that there's no licensing problem, is because the Schofield who invented it, shot himself with the gun that shared his name.

I love how this guy actually plays games and realizes that some things are done mainly to look cool in game

"I didn't write the book on these but I wrote A book on these..." - Very subtle flex there Jonathan.

I love that he cringes when he dry fires the gun. Awwww He didn't cover the Carcano.

"Arthur is cocking it one handed which I think is impossible" Arthur is a legend of the west he can do whatever he wants

"Correct me if I'm wrong" ... Well you're kinda the expert here Jonathan, I don't know how I could 😅

So refreshing to hear one of these experts actually understand it’s a game and so realism sometimes has to be bent to keep gameplay fluid. Love this guy and “ok pause…” is definitely my new catchphrase in life.

"The Volcanic seems to perform like a handcannon in-game" Isn't that odd? Since I thought the downfall of the Volcanic was overall weak and expensive ammo. So in reality it was a massive underperformer if anything. Maybe I'm wrong about that though.

Finally someone who doesn't just rant about the speed of the reloads. This guy gets games, a real professional

I sincerely hope you've seen a rise in donations towards the museum. Sadly, I can't afford to help out myself, but really feel like this show deserves some support.

As I own a single action revolver, I think what's happening in the beginning with Arthur "thumbing the hammer" is simply that he's holding the trigger down (As you would when you fan the hammer) and simply releasing the hammer from under his thumb when he's ready to fire. Still strange, but it is faster than cocking then pulling the trigger.

Mad respect to the guy recording all this. They had to play sort of far into the game to be able to unlock all the guns and then drop their honor all the way down for the footage.

The man just has a WA2000 casually sitting in the background. What a legend.

Dual wield sawed offs be like "where's the reticle?" "the screen."

This needs a part 2! They missed some of my favorites, the Schofield, the Springfield, and many others!

The double action revolver in rdr actually does have a precision penalty when using it in double action (you can see it better in third person or without aiming down the sights in first person) but actually you can shoot it single action if you press the aim button before every shot, and have better precision
