From world maps where Greenland appears larger than Africa to historical maps that show European claims to the world but leave off its actual indigenous occupants, to Google Earth which shows different political boundaries to different users depending on what country they're in, maps distort our picture of the world around us. In this presentation from Toronto Centre Place, John Hamer looks at how maps convey different worldviews both accidentally and deliberately.

I hadn't thought about it until you said it, but it's true! LOL. If we see it on a map, our first learned reaction is to believe it. I especially liked how you put all the different countries inside the land mass of Africa. Anyway, thank you for the work you do!

The tribes shown are the ones the European were in direct contact with at the time. Southern Ontario had been essentially ethnically cleansed of their original inhabitants the Neur=tral confederacy and Hurons by the 5 nations in about 1650. The Council of the Three Fires of which the Mississauga were a part then drove out the 5 nations both from the north and the west. which is how the Mississauga ultimately ended up along the Credit River.

Then conclusion of the matter? "Mankind is insular in nature and tends to view the world through the prism of his own experience". "The center of the world is you!" So the question becomes "What IS the truth?" We can't all be right but we could all be wrong.

Sometimes maps tell brilliant stories. There's a map of the US Mid-Atlantic with the orientation such that the the cities from Washington, DC to New York stretch from left to right in more or less a straight line which follow the fall line.

Does John Hamer sell or display online the maps that he made?

I would go with a old thousand year old map rather than GPS

Do you have the link to the maps of indigenous people changing over time?

Did you intentionally not use the Gleason Map? You could do an entire lecture on that map.

i have been watching your videos carefully...Many useful information....a unique and very interesting way of teaching...just one mistake about Cyprus...Cyprus is one unified island, but half of it has been militarilly occupied by Turkey....this does not make Turkey a co-owner of the island of Cyprus....It has been occupied by FORCE..... thank you.

I've had a love of cartography since I was a child. I wish I was able to find a career in the field.

  • Thanks fellow being for sharing awareness and insights out loud .As a side NOTE about the earth(dry land) being flat or round or other ? more will be shared with the human race as consciousness becomes more collective

North as up. I am curious about textual metaphysical connections to this as the electrohydrodynamics of the magnetic field is a toroidal upflow. Also of note is almost all 'life' has a clockwise right chirality. Sugars can synthetically be made as the isomer and are indigestible. Are these phenomenon connected?

The title of this nearly the same as a well known book by Mark Monmonier. Is this the same author ?
  • They know the true scale and wealth of africa , so they make it look small and irrelevant , so imagine if africa kept its wealth and resources for itself ? As the former french president said "without africa , europe will be a third world group of countries " so just remember the west , europe etc is only rich because of africa , AND africa is poor because of all the theft and destruction and dividing up africa amoung europe.FACT , so next time you see poor africa , dont feel sad or sorry , feel ANGRY about the theft and injustice againts africa , thats why its in the condition it is in , plus , third world debt (african countries oweing european countries money for its OWN resources 😳, can you imagine , plus a million other factors . Honesty is the best policy .

I tattooed a map of the world on my back shoulder to shoulder and fill in the places I visit like a Winabego driver does when he drives to a state for the first time
