Five unethical practices that can taint the doctoral degree process are discussed. Some individuals and organizations offer to "help" PhD (doctorate, doctor of philosophy or doctoral degree) students in different aspects of their research while charging money. PhD advisors and PhD student monitoring committees must be careful about such unethical practices among PhD students. PhD students should be careful, as academic misconduct can jeopardize their career and also leave them open to punishment from the university for academic dishonesty.

Among the greatest sins is when a student believes he knows more than his supervisor, insisting that his research work has significant contributions and that he has met the requirements to be awarded a PhD.

  • Sir, I have a question for which Im not able to get the answer. The question being, can I apply for Raman Chapark fellowship while i am about to complete my Ph.D. (right now I am going to have my synopsis)? Sir, another general question is that, can I start applying for PDF without defending my thesis, i.e., after completing my synopsis?
  • Sir, is it mandatory that one has to elaborate the research methodologies in detail while tailoring his/her research proposal in order to secure a PhD admit in Europe?.... I mean just identifying some open research problems in that research area and taking the names of one or two techniques or algorithms won't be enough to convince the admissions committee right?

  • Hello Dr. Ganguli, I am considering applying to a PhD program where they only provide research assistantships. When I look at assistant professor positions, they always mention that there will be few teaching duties. Will this affect my application if I try to apply in academia? I am interested in pursuing my career in academia but worried if getting only a research assisstantship will affect my application. Please give me your suggestions. Thank you!
