Emmett and Katie came up with such a beautiful arrangement of "Down to the River to Pray," a traditional gospel song that Alison Krauss famously recorded for the 2000 movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". The fun interlude at 1:45 was Katie's idea.

We try to match our songs to locations and it can take a little while for the song, venue, and lead singer to all come together at the same time! Sometimes we also have to wait for the leaves to return to the Ozarks, the heavy rains to stop, or Julianne to come back from college.

The Finley River is such a key part of the water mill's history and its new life as a dining destination. We crossed the footbridge next to the restaurant (1:36), and filmed this video on a stream that leads to the river.

►LYRICS - Down to the River to Pray
As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the starry crown
Good Lord, show me the way

O brothers, let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
O brothers, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way

O sisters, let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
O sisters, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the starry crown
Good Lord, show me the way

O mothers, let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
O mothers, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

Let's go down, let's go down [x4]

As we went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good ol' way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show us the way

O sinners, let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
O sinners, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

O brothers, let's go down
Come on down, don't you wanna go down?
Come on brothers, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

Down in the river to pray [x2]

I’m not a Christian but I felt like one for three minutes and forty-one seconds just now. Beautiful song, beautifully sung.
  • @gwynthegnome2050
One of the most beautiful things about bluegrass music is that there’s never really a “lead singer.” Everybody takes turns and harmonizes with each other. There’s never really a “lead guitar” either - everybody gets their own solo.

I was adopted, I found out later in life that my biological family are popular evangelical singing performers. I mostly missed the boat with the talent that they have in them .... however, I sang this song most nights to the 3 children I raised alone. This rendition absolutely brings tears to my eyes. The great Allison Krauss and her band introduced this song to me during the Soggy Bottom Boys/Oh Brother Where Aren't Thou craze. It was my go to.. I sang this song most nights and my children (now late 20's) still, to this day remember this song I sang with my ♥. I am so proud of this talented family. I can hardly listen to them without getting emotional! BRAVO!
  • The three girls have very different voices but they are masters at blending them into beautiful music. Such a talented family all .
  • @andyclark3530
The harmonies on this are wonderful, and the setting was perfect. And whose heart isn't lifted by these three young ladies' smiles?
  • @gray--wolf1672
Ellen, Julianna and Katie all have distinctive sounds to their voice and when you combine all three together sounds like angels singing.
  • @gamwtakteo31
these voices are a real medicine for ear and mind
  • My future wife walked up to me next to the Suwanee river minutes before we married while this song played. You're rendition wets my eyes. I'm gonna go hug my wife.

Where is music like this? Not necessarily Christian music, but music in general. I love the tone, harmony, and style.
  • @user-ly3vz4fo2c
Such uplifting, lovely voices. So nice to see natural beautiful women with a heart for Jesus.
  • @admseraph
Three beautiful young ladies, three beautiful voices, one beautiful song. A blessing from God.
  • I remember when I heard this song in the Hey brother where art though movie I was hooked... Such a beautiful song and the harmony fantastic.... Now hearing this song covered by the Petersens!!! Can't get any better
  • @janok659
Beauty is often hidden in a simple things, and it's also in this case-three beautiful voices.
  • You guys are awesome, I'm an old trapper from NZ, love your songs, I just recently meet Jesus,
  • Being from Nashville (born, raised and still here) it it so refreshing to hear honest folk music. Thank you for this. I miss this sound so much. I genuinely grew up listening this style of country/gospel. It brightens my soul to know that this style is still alive and well. Sing on!
  • Oh my goodness Katie, Ellen and Julianne sound fantastic!!!!!! Love this!!!
