Growing up in the 2010s and the era of tumblr, infinity scarves and flower crowns, it's hard to not remember the influence Lana del rey had on the world and the internet when she first popped onto the scene with her viral self edited song "video games''. With her following album, Born to Die becoming an immediate international success. Lana del Rey's melancholic, vintage, dreamy aesthetic was and is very engaging & immersive and helped to garner her cult status relatively quickly. To many, del rey has come to mean so much more than just a celebrity or artist, but someone who has an irresistible air of mystique within her persona and her music .Her music has been noted by critics for its stylized cinematic quality; its preoccupation with themes of tragic romance, glamour, and melancholia; and its references to pop culture, particularly 1950s and 1960s Americana. All these factors help Lana to truly make a name for herself in the music world and American pop culture.

-Today I wanted to talk a bit about Lanas background and success before also explaining why I feel like she resonates the way she does with her fans, including myself.

Lana del Rey was born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant on June 21st 1985 in Lake Placid New York to parents Rob and Patricia Grant. Lana had a pretty quiet early life because of her towns seclusion and very small population. Around the ages of 14-15 she began to develop an alcohol dependency and she was sent to Kent boarding school to help become sober.
Lana has said quote "That's really why I got sent to boarding school –to get sober."

Lana has said she had a early preoccupation with mortality and the idea of death saying in a 2012 uk telegraph interview: quote
"When I was very young I was sort of floored by the fact that my mother and my father and everyone I knew was going to die one day, and myself too. I had a sort of a philosophical crisis. I couldn't believe that we were mortal. For some reason that knowledge sort of overshadowed my experience. I was unhappy for some time. I got into a lot of trouble. I used to drink a lot. That was a hard time in my life"

- anyone who is hip to lanas unreleased canon can see the evidence of her rebellious and shock value tendencies like in the lyrics of the unreleased song Boarding school

When Lana left boarding school she eventually moved to Long island to live with her aunt and uncle while becoming a waitress. Lana eventually enrolled at Fordham University in the Bronx, where she majored in philosophy with a big interest in metaphysics. Shes quoted as saying in a Rolling stone interview , "I chose to study the subject because it "bridged the gap between God and science... I was interested in God and how technology could bring us closer to finding out where we came from and why."
Meanwhile, she lived with boyfriends, and crashed on couches. "I was writing, writing, for years," she says. "Trying to figure out what I really wanted to say and why I was consumed with this passion for writing, where it came from. It kept me up all night. So I was waiting to see why. That was a really whole separate world."

  • Wow… i just gotta say, i’ve been a die-hard fan of all things Lana Del Rey since she first came into my life during the tumblr days, and i am absolutely blown away with what you created by blending your experiences with factual and informative storytelling to deliver such a powerful love letter to Lana and her work. Paired with the quality of production, this video allowed me to fall in love with her all over again under a whole new light, and that to me is so special!🤍 i’ve watched this a few times now and unsurprisingly got increasingly more emotional and felt more chills with each watch. this is truly truly truly such a remarkable and beautiful documentary that in my book, fits perfectly into the LDR universe & and i believe it will age just as well. love love love the way this made me feel and everything it added to my fantasy ✨ Thank you so much!💐 💕🦋 i’m beyond captivated and moved by how refreshing i find not only this video, but both your channel and your point of view!😊 ✨🤍 very happy to have found you 🌹
  • She romanticizes the little things and gives each person a way of looking at their life as unique and beautiful without discrimination of the good and the bad.

I’ll never forget get being 17 in 2012. I couldn’t believe I found an artist that was so.. relatable? She is truly amazing.
  • @Dina4444.
What i like most about her is that her entire discography is like one big play. It's a journey from start to finish

the main appeal of lana for me, especially when i was a teenager, is that her music felt like the perfect escapism. i thought my life was so boring and mundane and i craved to live something cinematic like the romances and stories on her music.
  • @jesjesss
I still remember the feeling of being 16 and feeling like i discovered a whole new world of music with lana's songs. Everything about her seemed so dreamy. It's been 10 years and my love for her and her music only keeps growing ❤
  • You have outdone yourself! Whenever I click on a video about Lana, I’m usually disappointed. It’s like they think she arrived fully formed with Born To Die. She lived a whole amazing life before that, and it’s rarely mentioned. You did a great job explaining why Lana’s music resonates not only with you, but different subsets of people. You really nailed it👏✨❤️
  • on the subject of lana appealing to lgbtq people - as a femme lesbian, lana and her music really helped me realize and understand that being feminine and “delicate” and being a sort of hopeless romantic is okay. and that it’s not something you should feel ashamed of or try to hide. ❤
  • knowing that she was mostly performing for friends in those club shows makes a lot of sense when she talks about having stage fright, cause she wasn’t performing for a lot of people before going on SNL…if you look at her performances from before that time she was singing very strangely, kind of bluesy, kind of off the cuff changing the melodies and doing weird pronunciations….she wasn’t used to singing her songs for lots of people or singing in a ‘normal’ way
  • Her music helps me romanticise literally every aspect of my life and makes me focus on and enjoy little things. She makes me feel in love and excited to live my life.
  • The moment I began to absolutely love Lana was when I first heard "Pretty when you cry" bc I am someone who cries A LOT, but this song romanticised it while it also felt like the thoughts one has when crying; sadness and frustration. Lana has helped me feel like those little aspects of my personality alongside delicate feminine traits are okay and can be very beautiful. I love Lana sm I swear, no song fails to deliver.
  • @Kallenxo
I found her at 15. Felt like everything I was looking for was found. I needed her and I found her. She made me feel free. Even til this day when I listen to her music I feel free. I love her for what she has created for us.

Being a teenager discovering Lana really changed my life. Her early songs romanticised being sad and getting validation from guys, doing f-ed up things and feeling really cool about it, which to be fair was what I was also doing and I really related to it. I eventually grew up and matured, so did she. Her recent music is more about looking inwards, discovering and loving herself. Her new music also explores taboos and polarising topics. Not to mention she explores a lot of genres of music, and is not afraid to try new things and you just can’t get bored of her. It’s like we grew together and learned so much about life. I really enjoy her music, her artistry, her lyrics, her growth. Simply put, her music is really poetry, voiced by one of the best voice of this century. Just my two cents as someone who isn’t from the Americas, I haven’t experienced the culture so I can’t comment on that aspect. You put this together very eloquently, in a very captivating and enjoyable way. Thank you.
  • This video was so good. I feel like her willingness to be so emotionally vulnerable in her songs and not always have to pretend to be stronger or a better person that makes her music incredibly relatable. Like some people claim she romanticizes abusive relationships, drugs and alcohol, and depression, but those are realities a lot of people have had to cope with and it feels good to be validated.
  • Very well explained, I learned things I never knew about her. I got goosebumps when you played her songs in order by the years, awesome video!!! I’m gonna listen to all her songs now on repeat lol. She is definitely my favorite artist. So unique.
  • @DaBinChe
I love her unreleased songs...they are so much more personal and relatable. Great job on put this together!
  • Ive known of lana for ages but just recently got into her after a very depressive phase where i listened to a lot of mitski. Once i got better i didnt find mitskis lyrics to put me in a good place thats when i jumped to lana. Lana gives this feeling of romanticization of melancholy without actually being sad at all. Its incredible
  • @estelle6884
I related a little too much to her philosophical crisis and have always felt so alone because of it, it’s so comforting that she experienced it too because she’s one of my inspirations
  • Beautiful documentary. As someone who moved countries several times throughout their childhood/ teenage years , the feeling of being stuck in a time or place that you can’t go back to extremely relatable to me. It caused me despair, and Lana made me feel so.. understood. Lana is truly a extraordinary artist.
