"There once was a boy named Askan, living in the small village of Ivythorne. He wasn't the Chosen One, was of average intelligence and didn't hid any secret power. So, as expected, no one embarked him in any adventure to save the world, and the kingdom of Restinpith was destroyed by the Dragon invasion." Finished my book, i'm happy i avoided a bunch of tropes on the way. Gotta start thinking about a sequel now :p
  • Stan Lee once said "What's the point of making someone faster than a comet, more powerful than a locomotive if you don't care about the person inside the suit."

Power fantasy can be best used in games, where your performance is directly caused by your knowledge of the game and ability to play.
  • @jrheiselt
Yes, the American way. Why have a training arc when you could have a training MONTAGE!
  • @cking4869
In America, it’s the love triangle In Japan, it’s the love polygon In fan fiction, it’s the love family tree
  • Disappointed you didn't mention one thing about power fantasy: how lack of self-awareness hypocritical it almost always is. You fight one-dimensional greedy, power hungry, rapists villains, yet the entire point of the story is that the protagonist gets wealth, power, and girls for free without any efforts.
  • My trooper is a Mary Sue living in a weird power fantasy story in my Star Wars Battlefront 2.

I'm so proud you included a reference to the Game of Thrones creators' "Themes are for 8th grade book reports" comment.
  • @solllarque
I'm going to write a book using all of your tips Just you wait... Just you wait...
  • @LendriMujina
But the real question: could Love Triangle Man defeat Mary Sue?
  • @ximenakelley
When Fairytail characters come back to life with the power of friendship <3
  • It's okay for your protagonist to be powerful as long as they still struggle in some way. Maybe the villain is even more powerful than the protagonist Maybe the villain is cunning enough to make up for the gap in power Maybe the circumstances put the protagonist in a position where their power is meaningless Maybe the fight against the villain really only acts as a catalyst for some form of internal struggle

My mind is plagued by blank slate characters the audience is supposed to “relate” to that have every girl in a 100km will fight over. They infect my dreams and I can’t escape

“Absolute power fantasy sells absolutely.” Sadly that's true nowadays...

Hold on. Main Character powerful beyond imagination. Never trains/ Aces training on the first attempt. Faces no significant repercussions for their awful actions. Easily defeats the bad guy at the end. Gets all the love interests but isn't bothered by any of them since love could be interpreted as a weakness. Isn't this just a Mary Sue story?

Oh no, even Terrible Writing Advice has been forced to hoard TP. Boys, we are not gonna be able to TP houses for Mischief Night this year.
  • @1Shalnark1
Oh boy this is my biggest gripe about isekai. The hero starts out already the most powerful in all of creation and then goes on doing mundane tasks like gathering herbs while being the most powerful in all of creation and then continues doing ordinary things while flirting with his harem while safe in the knowledge that any threat can be beaten with a flick of his pinky finger.
