  • I think it would be cool if the sword had some affinity with the sword sorceries. Maybe give the sword a hurtbox when it is used to cast a sword sorcery so you are essentially getting a with the blade and the sorcery if you are within range. I could see that being viable for some builds!

If you power stance it with another thrusting sword And use the carian sorcery sword in your off hand the ash of war button casts spells
  • Honestly in NG+ I found it to be pretty good. I think it not boosting Carian Sword Srceries is lame, but I think people pitting it against other staves are kinda missing the appeal of it. It's insanely good for sword and board builds, same with dual weapon builds, because you don't have to juggle your weapon slots around to cast magic while also using a shield/another thrusting sword. Use a decent shield or a thrusting sword like Antspur/Frozen Needle and it's really great.

I would have preferred if they have allowed us to change the ash of war. Even with worse scaling, now that would have made it actually cool.

Something I still find so unbelievable about the sword is that it doesn’t scale gravity or fire damage spells.
  • @jakl
Your vids are pure nostalgia ever since MHW, thanks Arekkz for everything you do!
  • @Captnjared
The fact that the weapons weapon art can't be changed sucks because that could really make it good
  • @gunm808
so tldr this sword wand (wand sword?) still sucks. :(
  • @TheShogun47
I wish i could add the Carian Sovereignty ash of war on it.

I am going to stay true to my warrior mage for exploring the open world, but this weapon might be my go too for bosses. I was very intrigued by fextralife's video about it.
  • Ive been using this sword with the carian sword sorcerys and they seem to combo pretty well, and woth the shield problem i just cast scholars shield to allow me to counter with stamina in my pool
  • This weapon shouldn't be on pair with other staves in spellcasting power in my opinion, because staves are meant to be true casting tools while this is more of a combo weapon, you shouldn't think it as a way to cast spell but more as a weapon where you can personalize the moveset and kit, in fact it's especially recommended used with quick spells of the Carian Sword category in my opinion. The main uses of this weapon in my opinion are: 1) Main handed a) Paired with a shield and using the spell that buffs shields. b) Paired with the new off-hand dagger that allows you to get the powerstance moveset of dual rapiers + parry as ash of war in the dagger. 2) As an off-hand rapier a) You can pair it with any weapon and will still find it's utility since thrusting swords are one of the best off-hand weapons in the game. b) Pair it with a Thrusting sword in the main hand, to access the power stance moveset, heavy running attacks, heavy attacks and obviously all the spell combos you want. Basically you should consider this weapon if you really like sword and shield, the powerstance thrusting sword moveset or the off-hand thrusting sword in my opinion.

staffs in general need a rebalancing. For example, make speciality staffs like Carian Glintstone staff all have the same sorcery scaling. That way the boosts really matter and you can have more staff diversity in builds
  • @faaarp56
Maybe they could’ve made like the demon scar where the ash is actually unique or cool and have it do a little less damage than the 1st or the 2nd best staff
  • @catalyst7189
It's a convenience gimmick weapon, and now with people rediscovering guarding, thrusting weapons are all the rage.

I’m gonna quickly explain my use of the sword here and why I found it amazing: My way of using magic in the dlc is to mainly utilize ashes of war, oddly enough. I have the staff that boosts magic sword skills in my offhand for example, and my main weapon is the Milady light greatsword rather than another staff. Why? Because Carian sovereignty is an absolutely broken ash of war on its own, but it seems to end up being buffed by the staff further, and while for the most part I wear heavy armor, I also use the spell blade hat just for fashion fun (the tiny baby buff of 2% is just a mini bonus hahah). If you get over 50 poise you’ll pull off the sovereignty ash of war without being knocked out of it even by horned warriors. Now, the Carian sorcery sword, why does that fit in? Because if the sword staff is my offhand, wouldn’t that do more damage due to scaling? Well, that might be true for main sorceries like ranged spells and such, however, I’ve discovered that when used to cast Carian sword spells specifically, the carian sword can in fact become broken, and that is because when used to cast things like carian piercer or any of the other sword spells, not only is that spell hitting things, but the blade of the sword ALSO proceeds to smack things, which if you use slicer-it can and will shred. You can go from smashing through enemies with the carian sovereignty ash of war, to the off-weapon carian sorcery sword and start smacking things apart up close if you don’t have the time to charge the ash of war instead (example, bosses). This also allows you to have utility in emergency situations - keep a shield as your offhand for left to quickly swap to defense in the case where enemies are far more aggro than the base game (dlc). Overall, it ends up being incredible utility. But it is entirely dependent on whether or not you’re using the Carian sword sorceries like I said. Anything else and this sword will not be worth using for you. In short? It’s a spell blade sword, specifically for spell blade. ☺️ (Sorry for the edit, typing on my phone led to a ton of spelling errors cuz spellcheck doesn’t understand game titles and language lol)
  • I made a build with that sword and the carian duel shield and only using weapon based spells. Having a spellsword that can hit hard with both shield and staff is such a fun gimmick build
  • @Exisist5151
I mean you said it yourself it’s meant for versatility. You can run moonveil + Staff but you don’t have a shield in the offhand.
  • @mickchan6584
I think the weapon will benefit if you want to cast buff spell/magic and also maintain light weight . Caz you don’t need to bring a staff. The damage is not good for spell compare with int80 staff, but it’s a good weapon to lower your weight and casting some affinity spell , like ice and bleed during a battle . You cant buff the sword magic scaling anymore or no one will use a staff in the game . So I think the magic scaling is fine and balance It’s look super when awesome to use it with the magic sword and magic sword thrust

In DS3, they Heysel pick was awesome because you can combo an R1 into a spell like Soul Greatsword. But in Elden Ring, there's no such combo. Not sure why you'd ever want a two in one weapon catalyst when you can carry a specialized weapon and one specialized catalyst. To save weight maybe?
