Restless Natives - Stuart's intended ending.

The final scene in the movie Restless Natives begins with Ronnie asking Will and Margot, "Do you believe in ghosts?" before cutting to scenery as the credits start.
The producers had paired this sequence to Come Back To Me in the early versions of the film cut with Big Country songs in sections to show what it was they were after, so Stuart penned 'Home Came the Angels' which, even by his admission, was a basic re-write of CBTM, to meet them halfway. Original material for the film but closely matching what the producers were after.
In the end, the producers opted to keep Come Back To Me for the final scene so Home Came the Angels was never used in the film.
In some interviews around the time of the film's release and in the years after, Stuart did express his some dismay in having written original material that wasn't used in the movie, and although he never explicitly singled out Home Came the Angels, one only had to join the dots to realise this would have been a part of his disappointment.
Here then, is what I would call "Stuart's preferred cut” - Using HCTA instead of CBTM - and it is edited in here in stereo, as well as the final number Restless Natives as the credits continue.
Does this right an injustice? That is up to you but it is not the intention of this clip - the film will never be altered now to include Home Came the Angels, this is just a little edit so we can see how it may have fitted the way Stuart and the band might have preferred. I think it fits very well.
The film is out, newly restored, on Blu ray, DVD and digital as of March 1, 2021.

That moment you realize the best ending music in the history of movies could've been even better 😬

I flew out of Scotland yesterday, it was my first time there. I had made a pilgrimage to Dunfermline the day before, and by chance met an old man who knew Stuart, and we talked for hours. As the plane took off I listened to Home Came The Angels and knew I would come back as tears streamed down my face gazing in awe out the window. I believe in ghosts. I believe in everything now. Thank you Stuart

Some of Big Country's best and most evocative music. I'm sure I read many many years ago that the band's workload at the time was causing stress and exhaustion but Stuart had made a promise to complete the movie soundtrack so he was desperate to keep his word.

What a great soundtrack! Home Came the Angels is a gorgeous song, just wish it were longer! It’s almost like it was never finished! 😢
  • That ending is far superior to the one that was selected for the final cut. That scene at the end with the three man characters silhouetted along with Arthur's Seat is amazing.

You just made my entire month better, thank you. Both this edit and the news there's a DVD release of the movie takes what is traditionally a dire month for me, and makes it into something more positive. Thank you for doing so much justice to the material. Deep gratitude.

Great film with stunning scenery and superb soundtrack. This clip prompted me to watch the full film again and I agree, Home Came the Angels fits so much better. It’s one of my favourite songs, I always find it so moving.

I prefer HCTA to CBTM. My selfish image for CBTM is the lady who is waiting for the man in her kitchen. It did not connect with the film. Anyway, thank you for your post, Andy! I also enjoyed this. I am waiting to release this DVD or blue-ray with a Japanese subtitle version.

Brilliant as always We need another Live night mate ...

I might be one of the few people who prefer HCTA to CBTM. I find it quite haunting. I wish they’d ended the film like this.

Anybody else have the Gatefold special edition 45s? My attention span was way too short to EVER play 45s, but I played all 4 sides of this over and over.
