M is a fictional character in Ian Fleming's James Bond book and film series; the character is the Head of the Secret Intelligence Service—also known as MI6. Fleming based the character on a number of people he knew who commanded sections of British intelligence. M has appeared in the novels by Fleming and seven continuation authors, as well as appearing in twenty-four films. In the Eon Productions series of films, M has been portrayed by four actors: Bernard Lee, Robert Brown, Judi Dench and Ralph Fiennes, the incumbent; in the two independent productions, M was played by John Huston, David Niven and Edward Fox.

BERNARD LEE
M was played by Bernard Lee from the first Bond film, Dr. No, until Moonraker (1979). In line with Fleming's character, he is given the name of Miles in The Spy Who Loved Me. In Dr. No, M refers to his record of reducing the number of operative casualties since taking the job, implying someone else held the job recently before him.

A number of Bond scholars have noted that Lee's interpretation of the character was in line with the original literary representation; Cork and Stutz observed that Lee was "very close to Fleming's version of the character", while Rubin commented on the serious, efficient, no-nonsense authority figure. Smith and Lavington, meanwhile, remarked that Lee was "the very incarnation of Fleming's crusty admiral."

ROBERT BROWN
Robert Brown, who had previously played Admiral Hargreaves, Flag Officer Submarines, in The Spy Who Loved Me, was hired to play M in Octopussy. At the time of the film's release, the general public thought was that this was the same M whom Lee had played, but was now being played by Brown, in the same way that Roger Moore and George Lazenby had replaced Sean Connery. However, Bond scholars Steven Jay Rubin, John Cork, and Collin Stutz all consider Admiral Hargreaves would have been appointed to the role of M, rather than Brown playing either the same M as Lee or even a different character altogether.

JUDI DENCH
After the long period between Licence to Kill and GoldenEye, the producers brought in Dame Judi Dench to take over as the new M replacing Robert Brown. The character is based on Stella Rimington, the real-life head of MI5 between 1992 and 1996. For GoldenEye, Dench's M is cold, blunt, and initially dislikes Bond, whom she calls a "sexist, misogynist dinosaur, a relic of the Cold War."

Following Pierce Brosnan's departure from the role as Bond, Dench continued playing M for the 2006 film Casino Royale, which rebooted the series with Daniel Craig playing Bond at the beginning of his career. In this new continuity, M has worked for MI6 for some time, at one point muttering, "Christ, I miss the Cold War". Skyfall marked Dench's seventh appearance as M, where she is targeted by former MI6 agent Raoul Silva, whom she turned over to the Chinese in order to save six other agents. She is shot and killed in the film, making her the only M to die in the Eon Bond films. Dench's M makes a final appearance in Spectre in a video will, giving Bond a final order to hunt down and terminate a Spectre agent, which ultimately leads him to the film's titular criminal organization.

An inscribed box following her death in Skyfall reveals her name to be Olivia Mansfield, at least for the duration of the Craig era.

RALPH FIENNES
After the death of Judi Dench's M at the end of Skyfall, she is succeeded by Gareth Mallory, played by Ralph Fiennes. Mallory had been the Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee prior to heading MI6, and is a former lieutenant colonel in the British Army. He served in Northern Ireland (with the Special Air Service) during the Troubles, where he had been held hostage by the Irish Republican Army for three months. In Spectre, the 00 Section of MI6 is briefly dismantled in addition to Mallory being demoted. He assists Bond in the field when it is revealed that the Nine Eyes initiative is part of Spectre's plan for world domination.

"who would pay a million dollars to have me killed?" "jealous husbands, outraged chefs, humiliated tailors...the list is endless..." one of my favorite 007 lines ever

I like how in a very brief scene in Dr. No you learn all you need to about the character. He's in authority. He doesn't take guff. He's not easily fooled. He's concerned about the safety of his people and ensures they're properly equipped.
  • @21:06-“Jealous Husband’s! Outraged chefs! Humiliated tailors! The list is endless!” LOL every time I hear that!

I like how James always has at least some level of knowledge on literally every subject anyone can bring up, regardless of obscurity.

If I'm not mistaken, Robert Brown had retired from acting after THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, but agreed to return to film that one scene in LICENSE TO KILL because they offered his wife a free trip to Barbados with him while he shot the scene. A little 'thank you' from the producers for services rendered. Very classy!

"We do function in your absence, commander." Classic M.

"If you carry a double O number, it means you're licensed to kill, not get killed"

I read the books as an adolescent after seeing my first Bond movie, Goldfinger. Ian Fleming’s description of M closely matched Bernard Lee in appearance and portrayal and it was his face I always imagined reading the novels. You could most definitely picture Lee as a navy admiral. RIP Bernard Lee.

You know, I never paid any attention to the fact that they were cranking these films out in 12-18 months. Impressive.
  • The one from Dr No is over three and a half minutes long. It’s also pure magic. The dialogue and acting are superb.
  • @enrac
It's interesting how Judi Dench's M went from being an adversary to Brosnan's Bond to being a sort of mother figure to Craig's Bond.
  • The chemistry between Judy Dench and Brosnan and Craig is pure Majic!!!
  • The total contrast between Bernard Lee and Judi Dench is enough to give you whiplash; but both of them were excellent as M.

Bernard Lee---- the iconic M and impeccable Englishman and HM's knight to the tee.. Boy those were the days of 007. When this M is talking- you know who's the boss and master strategist
  • @jjrj8568
Lee's M: best boss ever; tough and no-nonsense, but trusts his team and knows when to delegate; also, he knows what he's doing and his orders make sense; a class act too
