  • As a Swiss man myself who served in the Swiss army, I'm feeling honored by your kind and solid video about the Swiss Guard. To this day, most of us are very proud of our guys down in Rome. Switzerland may be small, but we have pride and dignity... And some freaking mad lads armed to the teeth in clown costumes.
  • @burnadze
Isn't it ironic for a British calling swiss guard uniforms outdated and "clownish", while Buckingham royal guards have 2 meters high dust magnet caps, ride horses in full medieval armor and guard a grandpa wearing hybrid of judge's manto and christmas tree decoration with palpatins tunic
  • @ikaikaxkeahi
So this British bloke really calling the uniform of the Swiss Guard a "clown outfit"? While his country's soldiers dress with a silly, black bush-looking helmet? Okay.
  • @franreizl672
I actually have a friend in a Swiss guard. They indeed are highly professional and well trained soldiers. I've been to their ammunition warehouse, saw their private tailor, and had a chance to see their training... they are truly a fantastic bunch of pope's guardians.
  • The reason for the “clown outfits” is because they are easily identifiable and cannot be replicated. They are specially made from proprietary fabric dyed by hand and stitched with particular marks. They cannot be made forfeit to pass.
  • For the grace, for the might of our lord For the home of the holy For the faith, for the way of the sword Gave their lives so boldly
  • @paolotorres8537
Don’t let their clownish uniforms fool you. These guys are real Swiss soldiers. And yes, they do conceal automatics and gadgets like pepper spray underneath their uniforms
  • "Michaelangelo's renaissance rival and fellow Ninja Turtle, Raphael" Idk why that line makes me laugh 😂🤣

Thoughty2!!! I really doubt you have the time to read through your comments…but if by chance you do, I want you to know that your videos really are a highlight of my evenings. You do amazing work! You must work so hard to keep up this level of quality and output! Thank you 😊
  • @mertyuip06
Sabaton fans already knowing why the Swiss guard is still in the Vatican
  • 0:48 Never, never in your life, EVER, call this a clown outfit again. Thank you. A former Swiss Guard from 2013
  • When Thoughty2 said he has had a few people close to him that have started to lose their hair. That person was me.
  • @DoloresJNurss
I recently found out that the reason renaissance mercenaries dressed in pieced-together bits of wildly clashing colors was advertising. Every time they prevailed in battle, they took a bit of their opponent's livery or flag to sew into their clothing to put their victory on display for the next guy who might hire them. The more motley the mercenary, the more deadly.
  • @Albiliuss
10:37 that's Peters Basilica, the Castle of Sant'Angelo is the other way 😅
  • @wio2189
Great video. I once almost joined them as I was eligible. I decided against it as it was a two year commitment without any holidays or weekends off.
  • @emanfey
Thank you Steven Rix, Jack Stevens and Arran for constantly putting out quality videos and answering questions we didn't even know we had
  • Hearing thought2 say “yes 42” is the highlight of my new year

Sabaton made a great song about the sack of Rome called "The Last Stand".
