The Model That Never Was

Published 2016-02-28
In 1962 Revell released a plastic model kit of a 1/4 scale Chrysler Slant 6 engine that was amazing in its detail. What few know is that this was not the model they intended to release. The whole story of how a GM V8 engine kit was killed and replaced is beyond fascinating.

You can't really blame Chrysler. If GM hadn't been so arrogant to Revell, there wouldn't have been a chance for Chrysler to take over.

What a great, great story on those engine model kits. I am and always will be a big fan of Jim Keeler, and a few more well known model guys and girls. Again, What a great video on some of the most magnificent history in modeling. Thanks. Jeff
  • That's a fabulous looking kit and such a pity it didn't go in to production, that would have been a fun build! Thanks for sharing. Cheers : )
  • you guys always rock born in c.a love the memories that you two have brought back with the fun and adventures thank you keep it up young hip 25 year old cali in texas
  • the slant six was a torquey little engine and damned near bulletproof. in my earlier years i built quite a few using offemhauser intakes and split exhaust headers. there was quite a bit of port work to be done and the ignition was a pain in the ass to get to once in the car but you could squeese 250 hp out of a 225 and it still remain bulletproof. the powerband was very flat from 2k to 5 k rpm but being a long stroke engine higher revs weren't a safe thing to be doing. in stock form though those little monsters were anemic to say the least but good on gas. i often wonder how one would be with a turbo at about 8 or 10 psi and a 50 shot of nitrous would be using one of those 225's.
  • Long live the slant six! lol Thanks for the adventure that was fun and informative as always!
  • I used to own a Chrysler with a slant 6 engine, and it ran beautifully. I think that these engines are generally underrated.
  • I find it interesting how you pronounce Revell. up here in the NW it was always Ra vell. Maybe it is because we are too close to Canada. Good show.

Now that's a model I've never seen.  That slant six kit must have disappeared pretty quick in the 1960's for me to have never seen it.
  • I wish Revell will release the discontinued Renwal Visible Chassis kit. It's such a marvelous kit. Was in Salt Lake City in 2011. Wish I have known about the museum

I think they should make a model Merlin engine (The ones used in the spitfire) I WOULD BASICALLY THROW MY MONEY AT THE COMPANY Also wonderful video

I had a '60 Valiant, before they were Plymouth, that had the slant six and I loved mine. It was bolted to a three speed with a floor shifter, unusual, and was the 170 ci instead of the 225 but still had respectable power. Looked the same as the 225.

My grandmother had a '78 Aspen with a slant six and it ran great.

Fascinating story. It's an unforgivable shame that Revel didn't make the Chevy V8 model. However popular the Chrysler slant 6 was, I believe they would've done well had they had General Motors funding to produce their V8 engine.

I won the 1st Annual East Coast Fuel & Gas Championships @ Epping New Hampshire 1973 in my new then O/PSA 198 c.i. Slant six Dart. Not a lot of hp but “hell of a hole shot!”
