What you're saying is so true. I used to tell my employees that the best way to get job security is to make yourself invaluable. However there is another element to this equation. And that is opportunity. Just as in real estate where value is based on location, location, location, so too is professional value. You not only need to acquire skills but you need to be in a place where those skills are needed. Try being an IT expert in a farming community where internet access is unavailable. You'll soon learn this lesson. I'm also reminded of when I was in high school and the guidance counselors were convincing everyone to become teachers because there was a lack of them at the time. Well so many people listened that by the time they graduated with their teaching degree they couldn't get a decent job because there were so many teachers looking. So obtaining a skill and becoming valuable is dependent on location and demand. You can be valuable here today but worthless tomorrow or in another location.
